Have heard similar accounts as well about Red Star. Have not been myself unless my family went when I was young.

For cheaper but good tim dum (cheaper than crystal jade or tung lok), I like Yan Palace (http://www.yanpalace.com.sg) at Hong Lim complex but be prepared to wait even if you book! Although when I went to try, did not wait too long, about 15mins but a lot of other people who booked were waiting too, luckily my booking went in just before them It's noisy and crowded there, more atmospheric for tourists, reminds me a bit of dim sum in Hong Kong which is quite hectic and noisy.
