27" iMac or MacBook Pro 17" zinvie Oct 24th, 09, 05:55 PM #1 (permalink)
Hi People,

I am considering to get my first mac, but would like to seek some advice before getting one.
I am torn between getting a 27 inch iMac or a 17" MacBook Pro...

Reason 1: I am wondering if any of the any of the Keynote animation that are not found in office 2007, can be played in office 2007. I can forsee myself doing a few presentations at places where desktops are available.. and thus if I can save my works on a thumbdrive and present it using those desktops, i might as well buy a iMac since it's $3,000 for a 27 inch.. while a 17" MacBook Pro cost $3800 to $4000...

Reason 2: I can do away with the mobility as I currently have a 14.4" asus lappy, and I dun carry it around coz it's abt 2.5kg to 3kg, and it is pulling me down...

Please give ur comments

any reason why ur choosing 17" MBP?

coz for the price of 17" MBP, u can get 27" iMac & 13" MBP for mobility (can sell ur Asus lappy since redundant)

I agree too, MBP 17" is not exactly mobile, should stick to a 27" Imac and a Macbook

Thank you all for your replies... to hencpu, I wanted to get macbook pro 17" is because i do not foresee myself carrying a laptop around that often.. perhaps once every 2-3 weeks (For presentaions in my course of study)? Other than that, most of the time i guess it would be at home..so I wanted a bigger screen to watch movies or to play games every now and then...

Well, I did consider getting a 27" iMac and a 13' macbook.. but on cost wise it is just too much.. $4k to $4.6 (Not inclusive of office for mac 2008)... My budget max budget is $3.5k...

So i guess now I am leaning towards 17' MacBook Pro.. hahah since it has abit of both - bigger screen than the current norm and graphic cards that can play some of the mid-range to high end games..

if max $3.5K, isn't the 17" MBP at $4K over budget already?

i just feel getting 17" MBP is not worth it if u dun need mobility

if u wanted to watch movies & play games, isn't 27" iMac a no brainer choice? since its way way bigger & faster. u can get the 3.0Ghz C2D version for only $2.5k. can add another $1.9k for 13" mbp, sell ur old lappy to cover the cost since u wont need 2 notebooks.

off course ultimately its up to u

Oh sorry hencpu, I forgot to add in 2 piece of info that caused the confusion.. if ultimately I choose a macbook pro 17" i am thinking of getting from forums... since it is cheaper...

Another info currently part of the $$ comes from my dad, of coz he wouldn't be too happy if i end up buying a iMac and a macbook...

I just felt 17" isnt the way to go. Partly because of the weight and the price issue.
13" for MBP its good or even a MB pairing with iMAC 27" why not?

But then again you are the one justifying the needs for those and do you really need them.

Do you really need Mac Office 2008? My suggestions use OpenOffice for those windows office application. So far for my school usage im using Pages, Numbers & Keynote (work use).

Mac Office 2008 is so f-ing difficult to use. Blur like a b!tch. Just my thought of stuffs.

As for gaming i dont really game much but i tried "WoW" which doesnt requires much gpu usage getting about 70FPS for Low Gfx on 9600M on my previous MBP which just died on me on logic board failure *emo*

I just felt MBP and iMAC wont cater for heavy gaming but hencpu might fill you up for this if he does game.

Hmmm.. oh yeah, i forgotten about open office... Maybe I will go do some research on it.
meanwhile, I am not a hardcore gamer. Occassionally I do wanna play games that are within the mid-range specs... So i suppose that games in the future will require more than 9400M... if I get a iMac or Macbook Pro or both.. at least 1 of them should have a delicated graphics card...
