I was wondering if anyone would be interest in photoshopping cars? Its a great thing to do and even discuss skills and tools.

If we can get enough numbers we can even maybe have monthly competitions. What do you think?

I have a very good guide on doing some very basic steps to car modding using Photoshop. I use Corel myself but the basic thing that you will need is a computer that is able to run decent photo editing software. You will also need a lot of time to get used to it, but as you get a long it becomes easiers.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE

When it comes to undertaking a PhotoChop you will need 3 things:

A reasonably fast computer up to task, so what about the program? Well, when it comes to PhotoChop there is really only one piece of software to use...Adobe PhotoShop. Unfortunately the software isnt cheap, however you can still get hold of the demo version from www.adobe.com which should do the job. The latest version is CS2 with CS3 already in beta now.

GETTING STARTED

The start of any good PhotoChop begins with a base image in which to work from. In this case I have used 2 main types of mediums. Vectors and Photo.

When it comes to sourcing an image, bigger is always better. Image quality is also very vital for a sucessful PhotoChop. There are many great website which you can get hold of some very nice photos. The one I usually go to is www.netcarshow.com which is a very excellent site that provides photos of 1600 X 1200 which should be more than enough.

Once you have found an image and have familiarised youself with Photoshop for your weapon of choice, under my case is actually Corel, open up the file and you are ready to start the essential lowering job.

LESSON 1: SUSPENSION DROP

No one likes a big ugly gap between the top of a tyre and the bottom of a wheel arch...Luckily a soultion to your virtual problem is an easy one. Let the sacking begin.

This is a 1989 Nissan Cefiro

To actually lower the the car we adjust the body of the car rather the wheels as this will make it easier for us as shadows under the car can be extremely hard to reproduce. As you can see, the image I have chosen is a clean image without much objects in the background.

Once you have opened your image under your own software you will see your image just like this or something similar.

http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/8441/174mj7.jpg

Start with the use of the "magic stick" or the cut out tool to get the body of the car out similar to what I have done. I have taken the approach of using magic instead of sissors...

http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/6346/2rb5.jpg

Once you have fully cut out the image, lower it slightly so the wheels and body still look in perspective. End results of lowering should look something like this...Remember to use similar colours to go over the original height of the car or else you will get something like this:

http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/285/3uw3.jpg

See a strip of abnormal colours on top of the car? That was from the original car body and since we have lowered the car, we must remove the original bits by going over with same colour as the background therefore as I have said earlier, the more simple the background is, the easier it will be for you.

Nice I know, with the car sitting much lower to the centre of gravity pull, this car should not only handle better but also looks much more aggressive... I just happened to have lost track and accidently put on a set of Volk Racing TE37 wheels...not finished yet...

LESSON 2: THE RIGHT RIMS

As most of us know, the rims of the car is one of the most fundermental part of a car. Without them, the cars would be in a junk yard. With the lowered car under your applications you will need to source out an image of the wheels which you would want to be on your ride. Seen that my pervious Volk Racing TE37s as a joke. If you cant find any good images on the internet then you must have a look at this website. Actually YOU MUST look at this website if you are looking for mags to put on your car. http://www.magandturbo.com/pages/wheels.asp is actually a company that sells wheels however the images on their websites are of very good quality and well organised with a very wide range which we can use to our advantage.

As a big fan of drifting myself, seen that there arnt many Advan mags in New Zealand, I have opted for some Rays Engineering also known as Volk Racing.

http://www.magandturbo.com/pages/thumbnails/rays.jpg

http://www.magandturbo.com/pages/wheelBrand.asp?cid=-1497588138 should give you a good list of Volk Racing mags.

http://www.magandturbo.com/pages/imagelibrary/W_Rays_TE37GM.jpg

Under that, I chose the Volk Racing TE37 http://www.magandturbo.com/pages/wheel.asp?aid=1165181740 which should be good.

Once the wheel image is in your hands, cut it out like this...

http://img224.imageshack.us/img224/6031/4ph2.jpg

Only the frontal face of the wheel is seen...as the tyres will cover it up...make it as fine work as possible to ensure there are no jaggered bits. You will see what I mean when you see my real work.

http://img224.imageshack.us/img224/417/5vb5.jpg

Copy and Paste the wheel onto the car and adjust the angles to suit. This may take time and experience, once you are used to it, it should be a quick thing to do.

http://img224.imageshack.us/img224/7937/production19881stcefirosz5.jpg

This is what you call a screwed up perspective...no, I didnt do this myself. This Nissan Cefiro is a calberation work with my good mate Shaggy from Finland. He perfered to use Volk Racing GTC wheels rather than the TE37s. As you can see, the body it is all actually done under Photoshop which was amazing especailly when it only took around 30 minutes for him to put up the front bumper, side skirts and rear bumper.

http://img224.imageshack.us/img224/5651/production19881stcefirolr8.jpg

He sent me the image and this is what I fixed up...the wheels have been increased in size which makes the car look extremely aggressive along with the deep dish GTCs. To get to this stage only took roughly 2 hours of man power...computer power should I say...:D

LESSON 3: THE DETAIL TWEAKS

This part is where all the fine refinements are made to give the image the best possible out come. Most of the time this part is very much undermind which meant that if you are good with the end tweaking you can turn shit into gold. There are a few main points with the adjustments of the final images.

-Car Acessories
-Image Adjustments

Car Accessories include the tweaking of the mirrors, windows tints, car colour, wheel colour, exhaust placements, wings, body kit brushing etc. Image adjustments is vital, as its the fixtures of image brightness, contrasts etc. Image Adjustments is hardest out of the final tweaking as there is really no rules to it. It will come naturally when experiences come and when you see how other people do theirs. I admit, I am no professional myself and is still learning this everyday but decided to make this guide to take the hard yards out for you guys...

No No lol...I meant there is no need to as we only move the body, not the wheels therefore there is no need to create shadows lol...

When I meant similar colours I was refering to the top of the car body
