That depends on your definition of gems. And I never give recommendations. If you lose money, are u going to blame me?

Younger people have too much fun. And other activities distract them. Investing for their future is the furthest thing from their mind. I don't blame them. Same thing happens over at HWZone's stocks forum.

most beginners aim for short term capital growth (stock price rise). It is more risky and time consuming. A good portfolio should have stocks with long term growth potential and those with steady dividend yield records.
My long term goal is to build a portfolio that will give me a steady income stream thru dividends when i retire. Capital growth, if there is will be good.

I also a youngster leh. :p
But, seriously. If you just started work, invest only 20% of your disposable income. I suggest stocks because that's the easiest to get started.
If you are up to it, I suggest starting your own business.

If you are up to it, I suggest starting your own business. Starting business is not easy as he is still a student. Dont think he can afford much time to the business

If he's a student, he shouldn't even dabble in stocks. What money will he use for stocks? Tution money?

In that case, I suggest he keep the cash as cashflow for this business then.
