I notice that a lot of young drivers like to tune up their cars but odd thing is more than often they just use plain stock tyres. I dont think its against any traffic rules to use racing tyres. Even those import cars also using plain tyres.

No rules against using racing tyres here, but there is a good reason for stock tyres.

Normally racing tyres are made to run in one-condition situations. As such, a good racing tyre in the dry is rubbish the min the roads get slightly wet and vice versa of course.

But in SG our cars, fast, exotic or slow, are meant to service us 24/7, all-condition mode of transport. So using racing slicks or other race bred tyres could mean disaster if conditions change (eg: Sudden downpour), believe me, i tried full slicks on an EVO once in the wet and i swear i nearly pee-ed in firght during mid corner...

Hmm... most ppl take the stock rims and tyres and up their sizes. So, the tyres is definitely changed if they up their rim size.

Unless, they only change the original steel rim to alloy rim while keeping the ugly high-profile original tyres. Which is kinda stupid thing to do.

i think the MAIN reason why people dun use racing tyres is cause its expensive?
and its an expandable item so i think most drivers in singapore prefer to go for cheaper products?

Interesting, never thought of it that way.... Anyway, there isn't much you can do in the way of racing over here. This is overly congested Singapore we're talking about. If anything, racing tyres might even lead to more accidents if it's inexperienced drivers we're talking about.

Just my opinion but since they can afford the hop ups like air foil and custom paint jobs, might as well get the tyres to go with it. All weather tyres are available from the major brands as well. Some plain cars can carry those racing tyres very well without hop ups. Look very dangerous.

Later I go NP and take photos of such examples.

I would prefer to use Michelin pilot sports. Got that sticky surface and good for cornering too..:D

iirc, a custom paint job is about 1+k ba.

You dun need performance in SG, you just need to RICE your car up and PIMP aboit the ZHNG.

tyres actually is one of the very important upgrades. those using stock tyres wan only want power don want their lifes....

but tyres ain't cheap in singapore. a good sets of tyres for 16" can cost up to 280bucks per tyre. if u're on bigger rim den even more expensive.

out in the market got afew good price and good tyres like bf goodrich, kumho (certain models only), bridgestone etc. depends on driver's feel. i haven change to either one so cant really comment much. but i do believe a good set of tyres can improve the driver's skill and confident on the road :)

Full slicks on a rainy day + tight corner + semi-high speed = :boom:

but...

Full slicks on a dry day+ tight corner + high speed = :DD:

I believe even semi-slicks is going to be crap in deep standing water......

But tck is right, good tyres are the MOST important... esp when getting the power down or getting the right grip for the right situation

a good set of tyres CANNOT improve driver's skill... if the driver is fucked up, no matter how good the tyres you give him, he will drive fucked up!

BUT, a good set of tyres in a good driver's hands... :D a whole world of difference!

I disagree with you on this... good tyres will improve performance, not driving skill

this is the first step before doing any mod :D
no leh... even if you know your car intimately (ie powerband, handling characteristics, etc), it will be different after modding - and depending on the mods, it can be slightly different or a totally different machine.

I see ppl change rim like no tml but there is a lot go check out the diameter and fixtures whether suitable for the car a not and some good tires in the market may not be good or rather some cheap tires work better.

Plain stock tyres for drifting.

Spending on tyres with around $250 each for a good set is just too expensive...often we opt for cheap solutions by buying 2nd hand ones for $50 or go really budget for around $100 a pop...so its just a matter of what you do.

If I was looking for a good tyre set for track and street, I would go for Advan or Toyo for Japanese cars and Pirelli for European cars.

The car rims sizes may not be as simple as you think.

For example

265/35/18

Width is 265
Thickness is 35
Rim Size is 18

This is a very high-end setup.

Your average car only runs at around 195~225 in terms of the width with a large thickness of 60 at only roughly 15 or 17" which isnt very big.

The larger the rim size the more epensive you will find it to be.

A common thing with any performance cars is that the front wheels will always be thicker than the rear, usually running at 255/40/18 while the rear treads run a 265/35/18...usually thinner and wider for more grip for a FR or MR car. As for a FF or 4WD, a even sized wheel sets.

There is no problem messing with the rim size as long as you decrease the thickness with it otherwise, you can find it scrapping your under guards. What is worse is when you tyres are too wide for your front wheel to turn, usually its very "pissing you off" kind of problem. Leads to the early death and screws up your wheel alignment. Dont mess with the width...a slight addtion to the rear wheel wouldnt any harm but do your homework first :D
