The car makes its official world debut at the New York Motor Show in April.

All this means the next Impreza will be a very different size than at present. The five-door will be around 130mm shorter than the current sal*oon, and 50mm wider. To improve headroom in the rear, the car will be a fraction taller, while the kerbweight stays at around 1,400kg.

Yet while it's all change for the styling and dimensions, under the bonnet the maker plans to carry over much of the existing engine line-up. As a result, the base Impreza will be powered by a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre boxer delivering 115bhp.

The top-spec STi is to feature a reworked version of the current 2.0-litre turbocharged flat-four. This offers 300bhp and 431Nm of torque. A new 2.5-litre motor is also under development, although it's likely to debut in the US before heading to the UK.

choice of five-speed manual or six-ratio automatic transmissions. Meanwhile, the STi will be equipped with an upgraded six-speed manual. Instead of adding to the top-of-the-range car's already explosive power output, company engineers are concentrating more on beefing up the low to mid-range torque.

wow... so fast?

if this is really the new WRX... then i'm pretty disappointed... because i feel that it looks damn ugly. The current facelifted model looks much better... the aggressive healights complements the slim front grille very well.

The new Subaru will still run the very very old EJ20 engine. Also known as EJ20T for the "turbo". This engine has been used since the very first WRX, in fact some say it was originally from the Legacy WRC car, even before the time that Impreza was even developed.

If you had a look at the development of the EJ20, from the original 250BHP to the currently stated 300BHP, Subaru cars seem to only use IFI VF turbos. Usually these turbo are very small in size however with some slight ECU tweaks with piggy-back systems, you would be able to extract more boost. IIRC the original stock turbo runs at 12PSI, the IFI VF23 should be able to get a good decent 22PSI without much problems as Subaru and STi actually de-tune their cars to meet current Japanese laws which IIRC invalids any cars that rolls out with over 280BHP from the factory, therefore usually most performance Japanese cars would still have the potential.

Looks like the EJ25 engine is here to impress the American market. The EJ25 engine is very similar to the EJ20, having the same 4 cylinder boxer configuration, some people say that the EJ25 is actually a EJ22 but with a factory stroker kit.

For people who dont know what boring or stroker kits are, these are the 2 ways to increase the capacity of an engine.

Boring is the more "physical" way of increasing the capacity. Basically by boring the cylinder diameter, the physical increase in engine capacity, however this way of increasing capacity is very time consuming and requires extremely high skills and accuracy.

Stroker kits is the much more recommended way, however they too also cost a bomb. What this does is rather than increasing the cylinder sideways, it increases the depth of the cylinder head to give it more head room for more petrol to flow. This requires the adjustment of the cylinder arms and crankshaft and even the cylinder head.

These 2 are the ways that people are speculating as to how Suabru has increased the EJ20 to a massively powerful EJ25.

The good thing about having more capacity is that with the added "NA" form of power, the car will recieve much more initial torque thus, giving is a much faster launch. This can also mean that Suabaru wont need to that much strain on their engine through turbocharging and lessen the load of turbo applications which would mean less turbo lag, yet achieving same or even more power.

EJ25 engines do exsist already, however extremely rare. In NZ, there is currently a Subaru WRX STi drag car that runs a EJ25 with massive Garrett turbo which should run in the mid 7 second passes in the attempt for the Worlds Fastest WRX Record which I think is currently held by an Australian who runs a 8.8 second WRX.
