Any recommendations for la mian?

Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao is very consistent and good but looking for alternatives because the 2 outlets that I know of are at Suntec and Taka, and both places are so crowded with bad parking. Menu is a bit limited, not the typical dim sum like their siew mai is Shanghai style, it's like glutionous rice wrapped in a skin cup, not the normal pork meat kind. They also have the red bean pancake which is pretty hard to find these days, theirs is not great but usually quite nice. The pastry is not too great although they are not stingy with the amount of filling. Notice the xiao long bao prices have gone up, I think now $3.80?

Noodles wise, I always go for their beef one. Soup is very tasty.

I have tried Ma2 Lan2 La Mian at Parkway Parade, next to Macs and Coffee Bean there. I thought it was quite good, they have xiao long bao also. Not as good as Crystal Jade but with the juice and quite tasty. Tried their beef brisket noodle, the noodle have the Q bite to it, brisket was okay, not hard but nothing special, not melt in your mouth either.

I have also tried Pu Dong at Balmoral Plaza but too far from my house. Not sure if it's "la mian" but it's their own made noodle also, small bowls for about $5 each. They have xiao long bao, when I tried, didn't seem that juicy but the skin quite thin.

There is a new I Love Mian at the corner of Still Road, don't know if they are good but my dad said the fengshui there must be bad coz a lot of proprietors cannot make it at that spot.

For U have to try the "bo li xia la mian aka glass prawns noodles" at MA LAN outlet. Guess it is the nicest of all noodles available at malan.

holland V very far from my house and the parking there is terrible.

But, from 14 March 2005 onwards, Crystal Jade Restaurant at Terminal 2 is gonna have xiao long bao. Better book, airport business is sooo good. They had a special crab claw steamed with egg white dish, very yummy, worth the $5 each. They peel also :)

The xiao long bao at SLS foodcourt also not bad, good when you have a craving. $5 for 8 I think. The broth inside could be a bit tastier though but for that price, can't really complain.

eh, monopolising oriental cuisines? What do you mean?

Anyways, I just tried Kim Koo Dumpling and Ramen at Parkway today and thumbs up! :thumb2:

Noodles were nice, the beef slices one had very tender beef slices. They have other nice dishes, we tried the braised doufu with mushrooms, hot and sour soup, kailan.

The Xiao Long Bao there is up to Crystal Jade standard $5.80 for 6 pieces, all had tasty broth in them. The service was very very good. Very impressed, they volunteered to cut the noodles for us coz we were sharing and very quick to respond to more orders, asking for vinegar, topping water up.

Did not hassle us to order more although we added more orders ourselves as we went along.

Other noodles we tried are the Zhajiang Noodle, Bejing fried noodle and the spicy seafood noodle. The seafood one was $8 but the others were like $5.80 to $6plus.

Understand there is one at Bugis but have not tried that branch. A good alternative to Crystal Jade. Oh, tried the red bean pancake, the pastry was better, crisper. They had a special dessert Or Nee (wrapped in egg skin and fried) which this very nice guy Jim was recommending and we couldn't decide. Finally decided to try it but the last one was sold..waahh..

It's right opposite the Roti Boy so you can smell the Roti Boy. To the management credit, the manager saw us snacking on Roti Boy while waiting for our food to arrive (we were very hungry coz it was 2plus) and he didn't stare at us or say anything.

Jim also taught us how to pick up the xiao long bao properly, I never knew you were supposed to pick up from the top where the skin is thicker. hehe, so good, I had 4 :D.

The guo tie (pot stickers) was very generous with the feeling and big in size, crispy skin nicely fried on one side.
