R.I.P Edison Chen's career (1999 - 2008)

All porn directors take note: What do you do when you decide to call it quits and hope that the public will forget the, er, colourful content that you have subjected their eyes to?

Take a leaf from Edison's book, star of the latest photo sex scandal to hit Hong Kong. Organise a no-questions-asked press conference and look remorseful as you announce that you have "failed as a role model" and hence thereforth will be dedicating yourself fully to charity work.

Will he win sympathy and forgiveness from the public and, if they still exist, fans?

You bet.

From the moment Edison stepped into the fickle world known as the entertainment industry, he set tons of teenage girls’ hearts ablaze (mine included) with his bad-boy charm, cheeky grin and those dangerous good looks.

At the risk of sounding shallow, one of the reasons why I chose to study in Canada was because I thought that all Canadian-born Chinese (CBC) guys were as hot as Edison.

Until a good friend reminded me that Nicholas Tse was also a CBC. Then I realized that there were no such things as rainbows in fairyland.

But I digress.

Edison's looks have saved him over and over in his scandal-punctuated career.

I mean, the guy announced on a radio show that he lost his virginity when he was 13. And over the years, he somehow managed to get into alleged fights with rival Shawn Yue over love-interest Gillian Chung and award trophies, and even going as far to confess that his favourite sport is "making love".

The infamy doesn't stop there.

He made headlines in 2004 for doggedly chasing after two teenagers who punched him and made fun of his dance moves, suffering a sprained ankle and an injured ear in the process.

But we still forgave him. He went on to star in Hollywood and Japanese flicks and boasts of at least 10 albums under his belt.

No mean feat, considering the guy has about as much talent as a teacup. I mean, have you heard him sing before?

If we had Edison as a secret weapon, the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore would not need to use guns to cull crows anymore. Just blast Edison's songs at the pesky birds.

But then again, the unsuspecting public would all fall prey to his vocal prowess, or lack thereof. Maybe having crows might not be such a bad idea after all.

So in short, Edison enjoyed his popularity only because of one thing: His good looks.

And I believe his bad boy looks and rebel demeanour will continue to serve its purpose – make it easy for the public to forgive him again. Maybe not now, but someday in the future.

After all, the sad but true fact still permeates the strata of our society – good-lookers get all the luck.

He just has to play his cards right. Look remorseful and sombre when meeting the public, apologise humbly to all who were involved in the scandal, do a 180 degree turn from his bad boy image, while still looking like a delectable bad boy.

Now he just has to play the waiting game and thank his lucky stars that he was born male. Because aging male stars - he is now 28 - bounce back better than their female counterparts. Except maybe for Jimmy Lin.

But until then, we are left with his swansong – ironically titled "Do you still remember me?" in which he tries to rap, albeit badly, if we "still remembered (his) movies, albums and magazine covers?"

Indeed, we do very well. And now we remember the photos too.

Thanks for the memories, Edison. See you soon.
