Jackie Chan, Andy Lau to take torch through HK: report
HONG KONG, CHINA - HONG KONG action star Jackie Chan and heartthrob Andy Lau will carry the Olympic torch during the city's leg of the relay early next month, a report said on Tuesday.
Hollywood hero Chan, star of the Rush Hour franchise, will play a 'key role' in the southern Chinese territory's part of the torch tour, The Standard newspaper reported, citing an unnamed source.
Mr Lau, one of Asia's most recognisable faces who has won scores of awards for singing and acting over the past two decades, will also take the torch after it begins its leg on May 2, the paper said.
The city's Chief Executive Donald Tsang is to be the first person to carry the flame, the report said.
The torch arrived in Beijing on Monday for an elaborate ceremony before heading off on Tuesday on an epic world journey that includes to the peak of Mount Everest.
The torch will travel also around China before arriving back in Beijing for the opening of the Games on August 8.
Hong Kong, with its open media and tolerance of protests, will be a potential target for campaign groups hoping to use the relay as a opportunity to criticise China on a range of issues.
The groups may struggle to get access to the torch during its trip through the mainland, as controls are likely to be much tighter. -- AFP
