IT was the celebrity couple's big day.

But Daniel Ong and Jaime Teo chose to celebrate it by combining work and play.

After a two-year romance, the 987 radio DJ and former Miss Singapore Universe-actress-host held their wedding banquet at Swissotel The Stamford last night in front of 400 guests.

But from noon to 5.30pm, the lovebirds were busy co-hosting local wedding magazine Style Weddings' annual wedding show at the same venue. It was attended by thousands of dating couples.

They squeezed in the traditional Chinese tea ceremony only at 7pm (when the cocktail reception started) while the very same ballroom was being converted.

The six-course Western dinner started around 8pm and ended three hours later.

On why they chose to pack it all in, Daniel, 33, explained to The New Paper: 'The wedding set-up was here already, and we continued using the stage.'

Jaime, 31, added: 'We wanted to emcee it because it's easier and more touching for the couples to identify with our wedding story.'

Daniel said it was not as crazy as it might sound because they had 'a wonderful team of friends helping us every single step of the way'.

Jaime - who looked glamorously chic in a white Ted Wu bustier gown with bejewelled halterneck and black accents that later 'transformed' into a shorter dress - added: 'I get stressed out easily, but luckily he took care of everything.'

Not surprisingly, the workaholic newlyweds - who will embark on a two-month honeymoon to Canada, Europe and Boracay island in the Philippines in mid-May - also emceed the entire dinner.

Call it occupational hazard or control freakdom, but it certainly ensured that the spotlight fell squarely on them.

On stage, Daniel explained why they took over microphone duties: 'We have a lot of colleagues and friends in the industry who are the best hosts in Singapore, so we couldn't pick one.

'And it's unfair if someone has to work while everyone else is celebrating.

'We also have no more money to hire a host, and we're very cheap!'

Jaime added jokingly: 'And we don't want them to sabo us!'

With a wedding invitation that read 'Not your typical wedding, come in your party best', Daniel and Jaime's nuptials sure lived up to the zaniness promised.

There were musical performances by Kumar, Taufik Batisah, Jonathan Leong, Hossan Leong, Sheikh Haikel and Dennis Chew.

TV host Jamie Yeo - who said she feels a special sisterhood with Jaime because they were born on the same day, month, year, at the same hospital and share very similar English and Chinese names - gushed during the reception: 'My advice to them is to be happy and continue to love life together and don't let anybody tell you how to do it.'

Jamie's DJ hubby Glenn Ong then deadpanned: 'Yeah, it's not easy being married to someone more popular than you.'

Daniel and Jaime solemnised their marriage last September at Amara Sanctuary Resort in Sentosa, and moved into their matriomonial house in November.

This is Daniel's second marriage, after splitting from his ex-wife in 2002.

But the lovebirds weren't just all about fun and games.

They saved the most tender and touching moment for the end, when they made a teary dedication to their mothers, both single parents, and presented them with gold bars.

Both sets of parents divorced when Daniel and Jaime were a year old.

Daniel admitted to having a 'fiery' relationship with his mum in the past, while Jaime ran away from home at 17 and stayed away for almost eight years because she was estranged from her mother.

Both their fathers were not at the wedding.

Jaime thanked her mum 'for being my mum and my dad, I know it's not been easy for you. Thank you for bringing me to where I am now.'

Then Daniel addressed his mother with: 'Thank you for single-handedly bringing me up in Canada while holding two jobs and doing everything on your own. I'm very proud of you.'

For the newlyweds, this tribute was their favourite part of the whole wedding.

Jaime said: 'Because we love our mothers so much and we don't tell them enough.'
