Updates 27th Feb 06'
Personally, since I mainly watch anime, I use just CCCP and Media Player Classic to play my files.
I think you need to uninstall all your previously installed codecs first or there will be conflicts between the different codec packs, and the codecs may not work properly as a result.

I don't trust codec packs, sometimes they mix it with old & new codecs.. and even unecessary codecs that you don't really need for your .avi viewing.

2. FFshow 20050730

imho, its not advidsable to install too mani codecs and some of em may cause conflicts.Sound advice....I know becoz I installed a whole bunch of codecs - k-lite/OGM/Matroska pack/etc (can't remember all - after that, whenever I play BLEACH or GSD, I can hear sound only, while image freezes, then WMP reports a problem and closes the itself. Sian ah, I've since uninstalled some of the codecs - esp ogm/matroska pack - and the problem went away. :hi: Now, I don't want to kay kiang anymore....:o

K-Lite Mega Codec Pack Version 1.51

The K-Lite Codec Pack has a couple of major advantages compared to other codec packs:
* It it always very up-to-date with the latest versions of the codecs.
* It is very user-friendly and the installation is fully customizable, meaning that you can install only those components that you really want.
* It's easy to make an unattended installation.
* It has been very well tested, so that the package doesn't contain any conflicting codecs. It tries to avoid potential problems with existing codecs and even fixes some problems.
* It is a very complete package, containing everything you need to play your movies.
* There are different packages. From small to extra-large.

The K-Lite Mega Codec Pack combines the contents of three codec packs:
* K-Lite Codec Pack Full
* QuickTime Alternative
* Real Alternative

Plus some extra features:
* BSplayer
* DC-DSP filter

Macs don't use directshow filters, so these aren't applicable.

Try VLC for mac. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html

Btw, can the threadstarter update the first post with CCCP? It's better than Klite. :)

k-lite is not for the faint hearted. (some conflicts if you dont know how to adjust the codec pack)

Actually CCCP comes with Media Player Classic already, so don't need to download/install MPC separately.

Also for linux/mac ppl, mplayer is also a very good player. Lack of support for SSA subs means you don't get fancy karaoke/fonts that is very popular now.

*EDIT*

Forgot to add, the only thing I know of that CCCP doesn't support yet is audio tracks using mp3pro format stored in a mp4 container. The reason is that the included Haali's mkv splitter doesn't recognise mp3pro, but the builtin mkv splitter in MPC does, so a quick workaround is to enable it in MPC's Internal Filter options menu by checking Matroska. The most famous example of this is the rip of Shen Diao 2006 by TSKS for some of the episodes.

just a FYI , cos i tot is a codec problem.. Zzzz

nVidia drivers
Thursday - September 28

We have seen several reports and questions all over the Internet from people that are having display problems. Symptons include very dark, almost back&white video playback. It happens regardless of which player is used. This problem is not caused by codecs. It is caused by bad nVidia drivers, which configure themselves incorrectly.

If you are experiencing such issues, here are some tips to solve your problems:

*
Go to your graphics card control panel. Reset all settings to their default values. Important settings are Brightness, Contrast, Saturation and Gamma. You can access the control panel via: Start > Settings > Control Panel > Display > Settings > Advanced.
*
In the control panel (not the classic one) open the "video and television" options. (You need to be in the advanced view). Select "adjust video colour settings," then select "correction." Hit "do not use colour temperature correction."
*
If resetting the settings does not help, then find an older version of the drivers (for example v84.21). Uninstall your current drivers, reboot, and install the older ones.

If you have got additional or more specific solutions, please post them at the forum.

CCCP only. This is the "default codec pack" started by fansubs and in the last 1 to 2 years, more and more fansubs adopted it. :)

And my fav. player is still MPC :)

The one thing may like to note is the latest pack dropped WMV VCM9. Talking about rare, it is more rare because they do not come default even with the old Windows Media Player 9 you install. This codec was widely used by one of the eariler CCCP project starter - KICKASS.

MPC should have return an error code? what did you get?

Have you try using VLC? I sometimes just use VLC to do a quick check to see whether the file was damage in the 1st place. VLC is available as a single executable, hence there is no need to install, and won't cause more file conflict to your system.

Alternatively, you can use utility to check the 4cc. For mkv file type, you can try an old utility matroska diagnostic: http://www.matroska.org/technical/guides/playback/windows/index.html
