ONE moment, she was shopping with her assistant, the next, she is spun around by a stranger, slapped across the face and told "don't be so gossipy".

Television actress Angela Tong Ying-ying, 32, who portrays 'Betty' to promote the US comedy series Ugly Betty on a HK TV station, was attacked by a 33-year-old man in January.

Her assistant Lam King-fan chased and caught the fleeing assailant, but was injured in the pursuit.

On Monday, the attacker, Andy Chan Man-chun pleaded guilty to the attack, but claimed in his defence he was paid HK$2,000 ($350) by a man known as 'Shek Chai' to 'teach her (Angela) a lesson by slapping her'.

Chan had earlier denied charges of common assault on Ms Tong, and assault occasioning bodily harm on her assistant Mr Lam but changed his plea in court on Monday, reported South China Morning Post.

The court heard that Chan, who was unemployed at the time, was tempted to commit the crime by the money offered.

The police have refused to say if they would launch a probe to identify the person who allegedly offered Chan the money, reported The Standard.

Chan said he had not intended to assault Mr Lam, saying it was an accident that had happened as Mr Lam grabbed him

'I intended to scratch him... so that he would release his hands,' Chan told police.

TEMPTED

The court heard in mitigation that Chan, who was unemployed at the time, was tempted to commit the crime by the money offered.

Chan asked for leniency, admitting his foolishness and remorse.

The judge released Chan on bail, pending probation and community service reports, for sentencing on 5 May.

TVB actress Tong, is a former beauty queen who represented Montreal, Canada in the Miss Chinese International Pageant in 1995. She did not win the pageant but was recruited by the HK TV station as an actress.

She became popular in HK for her role in the TV series Life Made Simple.
