Well, this is my 1st time doing a review, so it won't be as good as the rest ah.
Synopsis:
(Taken from the intro) In the near future, Vampires ruled over mankind. The humans of the planet began fighting back, unleashing Vampire Hunters upon their oppressors. One Vampire Hunter stands out from the rest. He is himself half vampire, a dunpeal neither human nor vampire. He hunts vampires for money, and has yet to lose.
Animation:
The fighting sequences in this movie are very intensed and excellent, reminding me of the action in some of the fights found in Rurouni Kenshin. Being a 100 minute movie, the creators put in a lot of effort in putting a lot of detail into the animations and exploring many camera angles to portrait the story.
Being a movie about vampires and vampire hunters, a lot of blood is present in the movie. From being slashed across the chest, to being bitten by a vampire, there's no lack of blood in the movie.
Sound:
The music in this movie is very gothic and fits the theme of the movie. Most of it is orchestra-based. And the voice-acting(VA)? The original movie came with english VA. Before you go judging that all english VA is bad, let me tell you this. Vampire Hunter D has the best english VA ever for an anime. There is life and emotion in their VA, not the monotonous kind you get from the usual crap english VA you get from other animes *cough*Samurai X*cough* *cough*. If you watch the english version of the movie and still don't like it, there's a very rare japanese VA version, featuring Megumi Hayashibara as one of the voice artistes. (Note: I only found this version 2 years after watching the original aka not long ago.) I can tell you that both versions are excellent. Do give the english version a try as it'll really show you what's good english VA.
As for the sound effects.. The movie was done with dolby digital 5.1. From the clashing of swords to the galloping of horses, the sound was crisp and clear. I tried watching the movie on my PSP, and the surround sound effect was really there, the sound moving from one end to the other end, it was really clear.
Character and Story Development:
Being a 100 minute movie, one can't expect much from character development. I find this being one of the weaker parts of the movie. For example, there was this werewolf henchman who wanted to fight D and delay him from interrupting with the Count's plans. We first see him jump up onto a set of cliffs where he transforms from a normal human into a werewolf with a mouth at his torso with awesome animation. But the next time we see him, we're shown him having a stunned look and says "it's impossible" and then D slashes him into half. Apparently the animators decided to skip this fight scene, which I find to be a down-side. Really disappointed with this aspect, but well, one can't expect much from a movie.
The story development itself is done pretty well, you get to see a flow of things going on, and each event compliments each other, which I think is excellent and makes up for it's flaw on character development.
Overall:
I find Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust to be a very good movie and is highly recommended to anime fans, despite the few flaws in it.
Rating: 9/10
