Hey guys.
I'm in a bit of a dilemma right now. just recently my parents accepted PR status and now i'm gonna have to enter NS as a permanent resident of Singapore. I don't mind doin NS and all but i've got some questions regarding it and hopefully some kind soul can answer them for me.
1) right now i'm actually overweight but in terms of my NAPFA, i can get all A's accept for my 2.4 n standing broad jump which i'm having trouble just passin alone. Say if i were to pass these 2 and get maybe a silver, will i still be doin extra BMT due to being "overweight"?
2) As a permanent resident in NS, will i be limited in terms of the military sectors i can enter? Like OCS and etc? cause my canoeing partner is inside OCS so i'm hoping i can enter there as well if i do well during the BMT.
3) Is it possible to request the admission date as i'm already 19 now and only entering NS next year. So by the time i reach Uni as an undergrad, i'll already be 22/23 years old.
4) is NS hard for someone like me? I'm an overweight guy but i used to be in canoeing n dragon boating. NAPFA wise, everything i can get an A except for standing broad jump and 2.4km which i fail... kinda retarded i know.
5) IS THE 2 YEARS WORTH IT? cause my dad's been pushing me for NS saying that the 2 years is bloody worth it and that he should be paying the Sgpore gov to train me during NS instead of being paid by sgpore gov.
So yeah.. hope to hear from you guys...
Regards,
Justin

1) if u can get at least a silver... n if u r overweight.. u can ask cmpb for a review.. and they let u hv normal bmt... depending on wat the medical officers say... wats ur bmi?
2) which country are you from? i think u still can enter command school.. but nationality do play a part
3) u can request for early enlistment. just call them up
4)my friend.. he 100+ kg... kinda pampered kid.. but he went in for the ptp course for obese ppl. he now slim down and weight 20kg less than what he is 4 mths back.. he told me he loves running... lol
5)whether worth it or not depends on whether u want to stay in sg or not..
not sure whether i ans correctly or not... if anything wrong pls correct

Sorry for any inconvenience caused by i had to delete my old thread and make a new one here cause i originally posted it on the wrong section of the forum.
Anyways, my current BMI is actually 28. but like i said, i did 10 pulls ups, 10.1 sec for shuttle run, 45 sit ups and 62 for sitnreach (All A's and B's) but failed for my standing broad jump and 2.4km for NAPFA.
But i'll train for the 2 that i failed and try to get a silver cause i really don't want to go for the extra 2 months.
I'm actually an Indonesian citizen but i've lived in Singapore since pri 5 till IB2 (equivalent to JC2) so hopefully i can still be eligible for the OCS

OCS shouldn't be the issue if you are commander material.
Only thing is security clearence which will limit to which different arms you go to. Infantry, armour, guards, commandos, cmbt engineers etc etc.

Would you're friend happen to be a PR or citizen? cause i'm not born in Sgpore and holding an indon passport but nevertheless... guess i'll just have to wait and see.

he is a PR... just that he is born in sg... actually if i am not wrong.. if ur parents r foreginers and u r born in sg. u can only get PR for a start and obtain citizenship when u serve ur ns
your dad is seriously one of a kind .....
actually not really. cause he is indo, not singapore citizen thus parents usually like that... got quite a few IBC also like tt... parents force them to take up citizenship

noe this 2 brothers.. both Indonesian born chinese but born in sg... parents are PR... the older 1, as i was told his dad filled in his race wrongly, instead of putting chinese, his dad go put malay (dunno how true is that) due to that, he didn't get into ocs as i was told but went to sispec then came out top sergeant in ASLC..
his bro, went ocs and was selected to join the air force to be a pilot but quit...

i gone through hell in NS. especially in the last 2 mths.
i can tell u, it's worth every sec of it.
u learn to survive in very harsh conditions and learn to be a man. way fitter. i am currently studying in aust and it's damn cold now. but i have no problems with the weather, why ? because i went through outfield in freezing weather before.
if u have no money, have to eat instant noodles or ration yr food, u can do it. why? because it will taste better than combat rations u will eat in NS. once u eat combat rations u can eat anything and become damn flexible with food, which is impt for survival esp in a foreign land.
going uni when u are 22-23 so what? alot of my fellow sg classmates are also the same. but the diff is that we are more mature than the rest.
tough times dont last, tough man do.

I appreciate your comment cause i understand that some who took NS felt it was the most wasted 2 years of their life, but hearing your comment, guess i feel better about having to enter NS.

whether u waste yr time there or not. it is up to u. those that i mentioned are the physical aspects. mental aspects are not something 1 can easily quantify. u wont regret serving.
sometimes i feel i am protecting the wrong ppl, ppl who dont appreciate NS. but i hold my head high, knowing i have done my part in gratitude for the land i called home for 20 + years. i am proud to have served. partly because i have met officers i will willingly die for. men whom i will salute not just the rank but the person holding that rank.
sad to say, these men are just a small number.

For Question 1-2 and 4:
I have seen a fat and annoying officer and sergeant during my time.
And to top it all off they both are proud to claim that they were "SLIM"
with photos taken during/after their BMT.
And guess what....
They are indeed SLIM,
As slim as Rosie O'Donnell...
Anyway this is just my example no punt intended.
Hope you get the point, it is not just about fitness in NS.
Best example are normally the high flying COs and the "I sold my soul to the devil for cash" company sergeant-majors in your BMT.
They stinks ass and their fitness is so-so.
Question 3:
I believe it is possible. I have heard of people doing it before in different circumstances.
Question 5:
Im not sure if anyone actually like NS considering the things you can do without it,
So the question is to be sore about it or make the best out of it?
