Starhub will be showing, free on SH Preview Channel, the following matches
1. The opening match
2. Both semi-finals
3. The final matches
All past grouses with SH aside, this is a great PR coup, especially for people with no sports group! :D

For all FIFA tournament (ie Euro, World Cup) It is in the FIFA direction that major matches are to be shown FOC to promote the sports. It happen everywhere, the final and the opening match are always shown free. As for the big matches, Starhub can think the quarter finals are big enough, this time maybe the semi.. Since England is not in..
Dun like the way the newspaper put it though, it sound like a kind gesture from starhub.

How FIFA shares out its revenues
Still considered a non-profitmaking organisation in the eyes of Swiss law, despite revenues amounting to billions of Swiss francs, FIFA faces a conflict of interests now more than ever, torn between idealistic values and commercial interests. On the one hand, FIFA has to ensure that the rights for the FIFA World Cupâ„¢ are marketed as lucratively as possible in order to be to able to continue funding the grassroots development of world football and competitions at various levels. On the other hand, FIFA must also make sure that football does not suddenly become the exclusive preserve of the wealthy, who can afford luxuries like pay TV. For this reason, the 2002 and 2006 television rights contracts contain a number of clauses that guarantee that certain World Cup finals matches will be broadcast on free TV. These include the opening match, both semi-finals, the play-off for third place and the final, as well as all matches involving the respective home nation.
Haven't heard of any new direction from FIFA. Perhaps the Euro 2008 contract doesn't have this clause.
