agencies bring u to a lot of place like temple in japan which for me is waste of time lol. But the city visit is good . If you know the place or can speak japanese well. might as well go there without any agencies.
Go to places like Osaka and tokyo for shopping and city etc.
Also go to the disney land and maybe the mountain fuji to see see.

If going by yourself. make sure you master the railway system.

u got to have a guide/local friend trust me... i was there alone... IF you know Jap and can speak and understand well not too bad.. if u dun...Yep, the problem is........most of the people in Japan can't speak English, so you'd definitely have problem if you go by yourself. My recommendations when you visit Japan :
1. Mt Fuji - A definite 'must go' one! Also, near the foot of Mt Fuji, there's a theme park.......try the Fujiyama (an intense roller coaster ride last more than 2 mins IIRC, go over 200 feet up before plunging steeply.....the g-force will knock your socks off)
2. Go to Rappongi (sp?) where you'll find HRC, also while you're there.....err, check out some of the night spots there (very, very ex though). I went to a club where they had 'Light's out'......quite interesting leh.:evil6:
3. Akiba (enough said!)
4. Disneyland and Disneysea.......Universal studio visits are a definite 'must do'
If you plan to go to Hokkaido, definitely must try the hot natural spring bath there. Some hotels, and inns, have them within their compound and it's an interesting experience (supposedly good for the body/skin). I recall taking a dip in a hot spring bath inside, then making my way to the outside one (I also ran actually becoz it was snowing outside), almost froze my nutz off. Fortunately the outside bath was very close by. The water on my hair actually foze into little icicles while I was in the bath outside!:shock2:
Of course got so many other interesting places to go.....but, pai seh, forgot names and location liao.....:rolleyes1

go free and easy will be better. stay in the guesthouse. it cheaper and don't worry it is clean and neat.
Take your meal after the rush hour (such as 12-2pm and 5-7pm) as it will be very crowded.
If want to save some money, take your meal late.
Try the local japanese curry rice. there have 3 types - spicy, hot , very hot..u can try VERY HOT and tell us how is it
