We're discussing the Government's rumour to plan to scrap the Certificate of Entitlement, or otherwise know as COE to us where we pay anything from a few hundred of dollars for that piece of stupid toilet paper to tens of thousands of dollars. Depending on which classes you're in?

Actually i only heard rumors on scrapping the omv/parf/arf value. COE so lucrative how to scrap. imagine 4000 cars x $10000 x twice a mth = 8 millions a month!

COE scrapped, the cars slower than bicycle.
Cars, can't even move, whole of singapore is a garage.

January 30th, 2006, 11:26 AM
Scrapping of COE i feel is quite impossible ah, cause it's a way to control the volume of cars on Singapore roads... if COE is scrapped, the government may come up with other ways of price increase, like increased ERP or road tax to counter the scrapping.. this will be even worse and unfair for the past buyers, as they have to bid for the COE, and then still have the bear the increased rates.. and the new car won't have much resale value as well, as now there's no COE value to accompany it when selling...
so i really hope that the news isn't true... no offence to those who hoping for scrapping of COE... but gotta think of the consequences and why did government implement COE..
tensor
January 30th, 2006, 11:32 AM
they wouldn't be scrapping it anytime soon...
it would be more viable to adjust the COE pricing/ or certificitates that are released each round.
this would control the increas in car ownership at a slower rate + better returns for each certificates. yes there will definately be more gantry points. to limit the amt of cars on some sections of roads.

anyway, the rumours i heard from my source is different.... it's more of the past COEs being low because of someone in LTA screwing up the calculations.... so most likely, the number of COEs being released for the following few mths would be lowered and COE will shoot up... not sure if it's true though..

no way lah... the gov't is earing so much with just that piece of paper... they will NEVER scrap it lah. The COE is supposed to keep the vehicular population in check here in singapore... why would they scrap it? If they did, then they would be admitting that the control measures they put in place (ie the COE) doesn't work and they were WRONG! Pls lah... the gov't is NEVER wrong - at least they never admit they ever were. Just look at the 2 is enuff campaign for kids in the 60s and 70s... they never said they were wrong, they just blamed the researchers...
