As above.
My PE teacher has one that goes *pssssst* everytime he shifts gear, and he insists that the engine is stock, only the outside is zhnged...
can anyone verify if the stock turbo has blow off valve?
if not, then i can know that he's lying :D

Man.. All decent turbo engines need BOV to release the addition pressure...without a BOV you can cause a backfire and kill the engine...

newbie teacher earn $2400 as starting pay...thats without experience
every 5 years u stay with MOE u get $4000(first year) plus $3000 for the next five years this amount will go on till u retire
MOE give u $400 every year to buy ur PDA (or a fone that must have sumthing to do with education)
thats how good a teacher can be.

Basically, the BOV and the wastegate are 2 different things. the wastegate is located on the exhaust side of the turbo and the BOV is located at the intake side of the turbo. The wastegate's duty is to regulate the amount of boost produced by the turbo by allowing more or less of the exhaust to pass through the turbine. That's why when you have a normal wastegate it is common to experience boost spikes now and then due to the inability of the wastegate to precisely control the amt of boost generated by the turbo.
The BOV (Blow-off-valve) is just a vent located at the compressor side of the turbo to vent off excess boost when your throttle is closed. Without a BOV, when you release the throttle, the compressor (which is still spinning) will send a huge amount of air towards the closed throttle plate which reflects the wave back to your compressor, basically destroying it overtime. All turbo cars need wastegates and BOVs. The BOVs that you can hear going pssst are those that vent to atmosphere. Lower end factory cars may run recirculating BOVs that route the excess boost back to the intake before the turbo. Cars like the evo that run higher boost generally use atmospheric BOVs. Hope that answers your questions. :)

Good information there...
recirculating BOVs also known as pump-backs
internal wastegates are the wastegates connected on the turbo which requires less modification on the manifold however lacks the strength for high powered turbos......due to the fact that JDM laws restrict cars which pack over 280hp which by all means the real potential of a evo might be 300+ but to conform to the jap laws, its either turbo or elecontronically limited to 280hp...with this limiation, a turbo setup would not require external wastegate, thus to save costs, internal wastegates are used... evos such as FQ ones which pack well over 280hp are usually aimmed at overseas market without such laws like UK etc...NZ however only get the JDM specs so the Evos in NZ are 280hp limited...
