Hi NightRaven and wife! (:

I'm a 17-year old, currently looking for dwarf(winter-white breed) hamsters for adoption. I've read up on this forum that you had a new litter recently and I was wondering if you're going to put them up for adoption? Because I researched a bit before this and quite a number of sites have stated that getting your pet hamsters from a pet shop is not advisable, as you do not know the histories of the hamsters, how well they were taken care off, and these hamsters might tend to nip more than others.

I was planning to get a pair of male or female ones because I don't want them to breed. I only know that their breed is called winter white, but I don't know about the names they are further categorised under.

If you are not planning to put the small ones up for adoption, I do have a few other questions too:

1. Is recycled paper/sawdust better? I asked a pet shop [Pet Lovers] in Thomson and the auntie told me that recycled paper is better. But my friend who is rearing a Syrian says otherwise. So I really don't know which is better.

2. How big must the cage be for a pair of wws?

3. What are the average costs of a good cage, and would it be inclusive of other hamster necessities like water bottle, food bowl(I don't know what it is called ), toy wheel, etc?

4. My budget is about $80. Is it enough to get a good home for the hamsters, their bedding, and also food?

5. What would be the average prices of the various hamster necessities.
Food, bedding, sand bath?

Thank you(both) for spending time to read through this post.. and answering !! XD Oh ya, and if it is posisble, could you also tell me what are the times you log on to this forum usually, so I'd know when to check for your reply. Thanks again !!

P.s I can't wait to get my pet hamsters. They are SO adorable. (:

haha i'm always around..no timing...Mrs less often :)

anyway did ya read the guide? :D

1) recycled for sure...but i still use shavings ba...its more of a choice.. like for me wood shavings works well enough! on the other hand... some hammies just dun go too well with shavings tts why...

2) hmmm....u know the habitrail series? usually tt size is okie liao...or u can use a toyogo container too :)

3 to 5) good cage abt $30...but must know..they chew!! haha they love to chew the grills and u cant do anything abt it :D yea the rest u roughly can get it within 50... read the guide for what i and Mrs use! oh yea silent wheels abt 13. food bowl abt 2 bucks or less. bottle abt 6 bucks for quite a big one. bedding like back 2 nature or breeder celect is abt 6 bucks for 6l if i am not wrong. while shavings cost abt 1.90 for 1kg. sand bath try to use unscented ones ya~ i use QueFeng sand but u must buy from their shop at serangoon only. tt one quite worth :) 13 bucks or so for 1kg.

but hmmm i dun think i'm giving any up for adoption this time round... oh yea but shops one might not nip also...its just a hamster to nip sometimes~ some nip some dun haha their character and traits and stuff. so shop one might not be tt bad sometimes provided its imported. like my pearl winter white ( the all white one) is from Holland. and he's pretty well bred i might say...check out our pets gallery for pics! while my sapphire winter white (the wife...more greyish compared to normal winter white which is brown and black)..she tends to bite more n be more temperamental. so i would suggest a pair of males :D

oo icic.. thanks for answering all my queries! :D

oh yeah another couple of questions.. :X

Erm.. those pet shops you listed right, do you happen to know which are the ones who imports winter whites? I'm really excited about getting my pet hammies but I want to get everything clear, prepare their homes for them and hopefully get a pair of good-breeded ones. :D :smilewide

Hey there again !!

I just read through your list of pet shops again, and I realised that the first pet shop u recommended which is at marina square right, have winter whites from holland and yellow puddings too.

The name yellow pudding sounds really cute lol. I wanted to ask if there are any difference between them besides from their breed and fur colour?

I was thinking of getting the cage, bedding and all the accessories first, get everything ready before I get the hamsters. Would this be better than buying everything including them all at once? :D

Oh yeah, you said I could also get them a Toyoga (I forgot how it is spelled) for them. But what about their toys, water bottles, and other accessories? The toyoga you're talking about is a big plastic container??

yes its the big plastic container....er u have to buy everything separate...in case u didnt know :)

anyway tt shop dosent sell hamsters anymore...pet stores in shopping centres usually have lots of probs with live animals...

n yea there is a difference in puddings and ww...i wun tell u this but yea prefer u to look around! :D

anyway Sam's aquarium at marine parade is not too bad...but i think its local breed...but still hamms look quite okie to me and housed quite well too~
