Hi there again!! :D

I've got almost everything ready for the small ones already.. :D
Bought:

- a brand new Habitrail Night Safari cage for $28
- a 60oz water bottle for $4.50
- a pack of Sluish brand sawdust for $5!
- a pack of Sluish brand food (omega 3) for $6.

Yeah that's about it.. Did I miss out anything? Please remind me !! xD

Oh yeah, I wanted to ask,

If I get a winter white couple, they'll only breed when they're 2-3 months old right? How often do they breed?

I went to one pet shop in Yishun and they mixed campbells, winter white and black bears together. Is this advisable?

NightRaven
July 6th, 2006, 09:01 PM
its not advisable to put different breeds together :) i think u forgot food dish :D

anyway they can breed as young as 3 weeks...and they can breed a usual of 6 to 10 pups EVERY 3 weeks.... so if u dun intend to breed them or unable to rehouse them...do get a same sex pair...male and male or female and female :) just to note a female can produce till she's a year old every 3 weeks say from 2 months old means 10 mths or 10 batches of babies if one batch got 6 pups...u'll have 60 hammies! after a year! :)

I finally got my hamsters! :D

I got them from AMK blk 347, 2 for $15. They are a normal winter white and a winter white sapphire (did i name them wrongly? :x)

They're about 3 weeks old i think.. they're really small in size compared to Nightraven's Mr Sam and Mrs Oyster! Lol. But they're really cute. The pet shop auntie was very helpful! And I realised they really rear their hamsters quite well. Moreover, the old ones which I think people wouldn't want to buy, they keep them all n take care of them. And the hamsters don't bite when the auntie put her hand inside to choose the ones I wanted. :D

Yeah! HOWEVER. I have a teeny weeny small problem. :x

The normal winter white is very friendly.. I can reach out for it and hold it in my hand and let it run around, and it won't seem scared or anything. And if I stroke it inside the cage, it doesn't shirk away from my touch.
But! For the sapphire, it seems to be really scared of it! I only touched its back and it will stop moving, and if I continue to touch it, it'll run/shirk away from me. Once I tried to lure it into the food container than I poured it onto my hand. I felt it trembling from head to toe. And after awhile it attempted to escape from my hand by all means. =.="

What should I do about the sapphire.. >.<
Will it be like this whenever I touch it in future?
For now I've decided to leave it alone for a day or two before trying again.
Any good advice? :D
Oh ya, the water bottle I bought was from the habitrail series too, and I realised it was a lil high up. I put a small block under it(a toy i bought for them) in hope that they'll use the block to drink water. Will they find out where the water is? Do hamsters naturally find out where the water bottle is kept?

Anyone who have advice please reply me asap!! :D

NightRaven
July 8th, 2006, 12:26 AM
haha yes its a sapphire...well look at my 5 babies then u'll roughly get the size...hahah~ anyway different hamm got their diff characters..the normal might be well friendlier and braver but the sapp might just need some time to get used to people and stuff :)

like my sapp also ah..she used to be scared of me...and one of the kids also...but after awhile all okie le! just handle her daily or so...talk to her...and soon they can recongise ur smell and look forward to when u come! read around for guides on taming :)

n yea they will find the water themselves...they will explore here and there run up down everywhere...soon u'd get some cage chewing too! :D anyway better to try lower the bottle...

Okay thanks. I've placed the water bottle on the 2nd floor where they can reach it easily. U know Night Safari habitrail where the look out is? I placed the water bottle just at the spot where they can reach after turning left after going up the ladder. I hope they'll find out the water is there soon. :D

The ones I got is even smaller than your babies.. =O
I bought them two boxes wif circle openings at certain surfaces. I placed one of these under the lookout area, and I found out that BOTH of their favourite sleeping spot is there! Lol. Even if it's squeezy in there, they sleep inside there together.. :D

Oh yeah I was thinking, are they fully capable of eating the hamster food I give them now? Or should I mince them a little. And oh yeah, can they eat oat?.. :D

If I want to bring this pair of lil ones out to my friend's house I should store them in a aquarium tank right? those plastic kind. xD Once again thanks for answering all my queries? Imma noob hamster mama. lol ! xD

NightRaven
July 8th, 2006, 03:26 AM
yea they can eat the hamster mix liao...UNLESS u bought them WAY too early actually...when they are still too young... anyway yep its fine~ can eat oats but not recommended for too much~ yep aquarium tank u can see it in my pictures~ :)

haha hey they like to squeze n snuggle together!

anyway ur a lady?

Yong HJ, hamsters are always cute.
If you don't think you have enough time to take care of them, you shouldn't even have got them in the first place.
If you aren't a pet lover you will know the least about keeping pets and how they make you happy..
And lastly they won't get smelly if you take care of them..
They aren't very costly too keep either. :)

And yes NightRaven, I'm a lady! :D

They finally found where the water is already!! Hehe. :)
The sapphire one is still so shy!
When you say you handle it daily, you mean you carry them out or you just touch them inside the cage??

:D

NightRaven
July 8th, 2006, 01:09 PM

Hahas NightRaven you didn't answer my question.. :x

I was asking what you really meant by u handling them daily.. you just touch them inside the cage for a few days? Or you carry them out.

I haven't carried the Sapphire out yet.. I stroke it's back frequently. :D

NightRaven
July 8th, 2006, 06:09 PM

@ nightraven

i have a few problems with my hams, and it appears most of them come from 1 of the same familiy tree, the problem is that some of the female hams, pearl or sapphire would have some kind of swelling at their legs, which is accompanied by a bad smell, something like flesh rot,but not that bad, i am wondering if you have encounter this before?

if so any steps to cure or stop it? , one of my old pearl died by this along with a nose cancer.

d0ughnut
July 12th, 2006, 08:34 PM
Lol yeah NightRaven! :D How long would the review last anyway?

Barrin.. although I've never encountered what you had mentioned, I strongly feel that you should take your hammies to the vet to find out what's wrong.
You could try Dr Grace Heng at Chua Chu Kang. I think that this kind of symptom is not something we're able to do something about and it really requires professional advice.. So yeah, bring them to the vet :D

Oh yeah I have another query!!

Mr NightRaven, when you put your hamsters in the bath sand, do they automatically start rolling in it? `Cause my two small ones only dig and dig in it, they don't roll in it at alll. =.="

The smaller one, which is the Sapphire, even tried eating it. =.=

Is it because they're still too small so they do not know what to do??

haha my also blur dunno what to do..well i just turn them around shake shake their back inside awhile then i wait one week then again then another...then one of those weeks u see they suto know what to do liao and they'll love it! :) anyway be wary of the sands u use! use only those that clump then BREAK DOWN. it MUST break down when it dries up if not its dangerous for hamms. some have been reported dead cuz they accidentally swallowed it~ :)

I meant the review of my account at singapore hamster club :D

Oh okay.. so next time I'll turn them around shake shake their backside in it :D
I not too sure about the brand but I bought it from Pet Lover's Centre and it's supposed to be specially for hamsters.. So I should wet some of it than see if it breaks up when it dries to see if it's harmful??

YONG HJ you disgust me.

First of all, its the RODENT family, not the RAT family.
As I've mentioned to you before.. People like you who don't love pets don't understand how we hamster-lovers feel.

Are you a bit sick in the mind..? Getting your friend's pet hammie's pups to feed to a fish?

You're disgusting really.

NightRaven

Yong HJ. check your pm. You got yourself a warning.

you are free to post what u want. but posts like this that incite flame wars and stupid comments will not be tolerated. i can jolly well edit your post, but i will not. u decide for yourself. respect what other people love and people will respect u for tt.

thanks and have a nice day.

NightRaven
