Heres mine:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v445/Kiwi87/hermitcrabs.jpg
2 of them, got them few weeks ago. Haven't really thought of a name for them lol. Kinda boring to keep them coz they hide in the shell all day...:(
They are scavengers so they aren't picky on food. I feed them turtle pellets :DD:

Hmm, do fish shops sell these?
And also what conditions should they be kept in?
Like need water?
Water must cycle?
Need filter?
Blsb blah..
And how much do they cost?
Need to provide shells incase they grow too big?
I need to fill my empty 10L tank with something.

An aquarium with 2-3 inches of gravel or sand is ideal. Optimum temperature is 70-75 degrees Fahrenheit.
Like need water?
Daily misting your crab outside his enclosure, although not necessary, is desirable. Fresh water should always be available. Use a non-metallic shallow dish with a sponge placed in the center to prevent drowning.
Water must cycle?
Don't have to put water directly in the tank.
Need filter?
Same reason as above.
And how much do they cost?
I got them for about $6(cheap). They get sold out pretty quickly as they look very interesting :) Comes in about 10 or more in some ordinary fish shops. Pretty rare i would say.
Need to provide shells incase they grow too big?
Yes the bigger shell is required and can be bought in Singapore.

Scavengers. Anything. There are hermit crab pellets sold also. They drink fresh water :)
There are those tat are completely living in deep seawater, those are expensive and difficult to rear.

Just some more questions:
I can't mist in his tank?
When is the time to change shells?
The misting is for humiditity right? Then can I just pour a little water into the gravel? say 1 inch out of 2-3inches.
Anyone been to qianhu fish farm and saw hermits there before?
Thanks :)
I did some research and found this great website. Check it out - pictures, pictures, pictures

Yea i think pouring some water will do, as long as its not deep enongh to make the hermit drown or trapped

relac man , they more scared of u than u scared of em.
btw are they the land variety or the semiaquatic types?
semiaquatic types needs a dish with seawater or else the crabbies will dehydrate and go to crab heaven.
ktk
September 3rd, 2006, 05:49 AM
btw DONT play with em for at least a week after u get them, it will stress em out and sometimes they will go to crabbie heaven.
but it is desirable in that week to:
keep em in a cool DARK place as they are nocturnal creatures.
mist them outside their enclosure with DISTILLED/bottled water. Chlorine and the pee in the tap water is BAD for them.like cyanide to you.
make sure they get lots of different foods , not just typical stuff(pellets).
Mum's vege peels make good meals to them , just make sure to change food daily cuz the food rots and may breed bacteria and germs.pringles potato chip caps make good containers for food and ez for u to remove and clean too ^^
Heat kills them QUICK . idea temps should be btw 23-28 degs c AMBIENT, dont put them in front of the air con for god's sake...
get ones with at least 2.5cm-3cm shell diameters (mid-size) as the small ones dont adapt well.
they are VERY social creatures despite their names so at least buy 2 or they will get lonly and die.
why i know so much? i reseached lots when keeping em but no time so return em to shop for other easier to keep pets (beetle larvae).

smaller pieces oxidize and rot faster but seeing ur hermit size crab sizes ...i think its worth it to be more hardwroking when feeding ur pets.
and there are some foods that u must avoid feeding them such as man made stuff or processed food with MSG/salt and preservatives.
as i said, mums fruit/vege peel leftovers are the best for them.

this is THE BEST place to find out about care and all the things u need abt ur hermit crabs IMHO, i got lots of help when i kept mine for a week from the lovely americans and europeans on that forum ^^

I got some questions:
1. How many times do you feed them a day?
2. Where did you buy yours from? Did you buy some extra shells for them as well?
3. Do we need to worry about the humidity and temperature in Singapore?
And thanks for the link to that forum, it is very informative.

Wow! It's nice to see that there are fellow Singaporeans who are so interested in hermit crabs as well! Most of the online hermit crab forums I found are those in the USA!
Here are a few of my crabs. Some from J8, some from a pet store in Serangoon. These are the only 2 stores I know of. Can anyone PM me where I can find more hermit crabs?

And here's my crabitat (after being revamped for many times). They have a shell shopping area on the 2nd level for them to choose and change into.

I should be upgrading to a new and bigger tank soon once I buy more crabs (I have 4 now). I find it very interesting to scout and buy things for them to climb (they love to climb!) and play with! If you notice the bamboo fence in my crabitat, they love to do bouldering on that!

I paid the same price but there was no minimum amount I had to buy. Have to go at the right time (when the shipment just comes in) cos sometimes all that are left are the small ones with the broken limbs (which I got one of anyway)

erm.. just curious.. how to know they r male or female.. and they reproduce in wad way.. as in eggs? or ?
Male or female?
Most crab-care books state that it is impossible to tell the sex between male and female land hermit crabs. Actually I have found that is not that difficult, provided your hermit crab is willing to come rather far out of its shell for you.
The female land hermit crab has tiny genital openings called gonopores. The gonopores are located on the first segment of the back pair of walking legs. They are close in to the body, near the joint of the cephalothorax and abdomen.
The gonopores are the openings into which the male crab places his spermatophore during mating. The male crab, gently tapping and rocking the female crab, encourages her to come out of her shell. The crabs mate in a position where the female's gonopores line up with male's fifth pair of legs. The male gently places his spermatophore into the female's gonopores.
Since females of both species of land hermit crab sold in the United States (purple claw and Ecuadorian) have gonopores in the same place and of the same size, it is probably safe to say that all the females of the species kept in captivity (including Australian species) have their gonopores similarly situated.
http://www.hermit-crabs.com/images/gonopores.jpg
Many crabs are reluctant to come far enough out of their shells to allow you to see whether or not they have gonopores --
DO NOT FORCE THEM!! To have a better chance of seeing them, try looking for them after or during your pets' weekly bath. I have found most of my crabs are willing to come out far enough, but not all of them. Do not under any circumstances attempt to pull a crab from its shell to see the gonopores. The crab will sooner allow itself to be torn apart than be forcibly removed from its protective shell house

Oh dear... My condolences...
One of my crabs died on me some time back too. Like you, I also thought she was molting. Then I wondered about the humidity level of my tank.
I bought a hygro, thermometer from Sim Lim Tower and have been monitoring the humidity level with daily spritzs. It's amazing how low the huimidity can go actually, especially when the lid of my tank if off. Read that they need moisture in the air to breathe through their gills and without it, it's a slow and painful death.
Ever since, no more deaths. (crosses fingers)
But it's highly possible that they were both very highly stressed before them came to you, and you actually helped them survive a few more weeks!

:embarasse Really glad to find this forum... I been into crabbing for a few months... I did alot of research on them and have joined a few overeas forum. However, it is sometimes hard to relate things since the weather and many things are different at other countries. I hope to share my experience with you guys here...
Hi elutris,
Is true that the crabs are really stressful. Furthermore, they are kept in shops without much care. Wanted to ask you how much you bought your thermometer and hygro? And what is the humidity and temperature in your tank?
I know that sea sponge are good to keep the humidity good in the tank. Of course, glass tanks are prefered over plastic tanks because they can keep humidity better than plastic tanks. By the way, the sea sponge is placed in the water dish to increase the humidity in the tank. It does help to keep the hermies from drowning too. I saw some sponge at some aquariums but not too sure whether to get them as they seem rough and veyr artificial. They owner there dun know what are sea sponge too. I trying to get sea sponge for my hermies. If the wrong type of sponge are used, it will be harmful to them because they sometimes will feed on the sponge.
Hi PinGer,
How you know merom died? What did you see or smell? Sometimes it can be really hard to differentiate molting and death. You should be careful. Keep him for some more time, see whether he produce those kind of smelly fishy smell. If yes, then it is dead. Just to be safe then sorry...
Actually i am not expert also... I am quite new... Lets share our experience here... I only did alot of research on hermies. Hope to hear from you guys soon....

I do agree with you that that it's hard to relate to other overaseas crabbers in the US and Europe so I was very glad when I found this thread/forum as well! In fact, some of them kept asking me to get under tank heaters (UTH) or some form of heating and humidifiers. I have enough trouble keeping the heat and humidity down as it is sometimes! Hope to get to share our experiences and resources too!
I bought my thermomter/hygrometer for around $25 dollars. I have tried aquariums at clementi and serangoon but all they have are thermometers. I then tried photography shops. Most of them don't sell them seperate from the dry cabinet and when I found a store which did, it was $28 and was analog. My temperature ranges from 28-31 celsuis and humidity ranges from 77-85%.
My 2nd level acts as humidifier and a level for shell shopping. I use those filter sponges you see at aquariums as a base and sprintz water on it whenever humidity gets low (when I turn the aircon on). Like you, I tried looking for sea sponges and even moss for the 2nd level but just couldn't find it here in SG!
It's nice to talk about hermit crabs with fellow enthusiats. Some of my friends are thinking I am crazy now cos I keep talking about my hermit crabs, though I have managed to win 3 over so far and now they are keeping crabs too! May I know where you bought your crabbies from? I'm always trying to find new shops to shop at! Also, any photos?

Kekin

Good to see a fellow crabber here toO! Thanks for the compliment! The tank deco is more for my aesthetic benefit really cos I don't think the hermies care how nice it looks as long as they have the basics! Heh heh.
Any pictures of your crabs and crabitat? Always like to see photos! Also, where did you get your crabs from and how many do you have?

Hey Pinger, just curious if you have gotten a jumbo crab. Any photos if you have? I've seen them in the stores at Serangoon (like the size of a baseball) but scared it will bully my other crabs and frankly ... well I'm a little scared of them! Not to mention the smaller ones are cuter... :P
actually i dont think it's of jumbo size. it's at most a medium. but compared to the small ones it's bout twice the size just by looking at the shell.. it still looks small to me and it doesnt really bully the small ones. instead it's pretty timid..

i've got 10 of dem now. i got 1 baseball size perlatus u saw at serangoon while the rest r medium n small size rugosus. i got mine mostly from serangoon. tried yishun n clementi but they r not selling anymore. wat the boss at the serangoon shop told me is that their price will increase becos they need to apply for the license. its already $8 now. so might increase even future.

Hihi,
Yes... WHen i was in the forum such as crabjournal and yahoo hermit crab group, everyone talking about how low the humidity can get... bla bla... bla...
However here, actually singapore humidity and temperature is quite high. So you bought your thermomter/hygrometer at sim lim tower is it? What shop name is it call? By the way, wat i read was to keep the temperature between 22 to 27 degree celsius and humidity between 70% to 80%.
The sponge you used is it reachaeable by the crabs? Hope that that cant reach them because it will be harmful if they chew on them. I think i will be getting normal sponge to increase the humidity of the tank too.
Another curious question.. How did you mange to create the second level?? What you used to raise the 2nd level? I wanted to create one for them too.. One for them to climb and play there. Maybe another small second level at another side of tank which is unreachable by the crabs for increasing the humidity.
By the way, are your crabs still in painted shells? Maybe you want to consider to change natural shell for them. I read in many websites that painted shells are very harmful to them. Actually, i can see part of the paint on 1 of my hermie's shell peeling off so i am trying to get new ones this sat when i visit Serangoon. I have only 2 crabs and they are all from haha crabs. Price there is quite ex, maybe becausing of the liscensing costs. I did email them a few times and was told that they were the only legal seller for hermit crabs. Been very busy lately with my work and studies so not much time to decorate my crabitat. Will try to upload some photos this weekend....
I also been talking to my friends about hermit crab. Some heard about hermit crab before, some dont even know what is it. But they are quite interested about them after telling them some interesting stuff about the crabs such as the shell is not part of their body as they find bigger ones as they grow and the molting process.... Hope we can discuss more on hermit crabs here and interest more people to get hermies too! hee hee

speaking of which, who wans a 2ft glass tank?
elutris
September 28th, 2006, 12:31 PM
That's the temp/humidity range I read from those forums and others as well. However, it's actually quite hard to keep the temperature to 22-27 degrees in Singapore. Even with air conditioning, the most I can get it to go is 27 degree celsius (and I am not going to constantly give my crabs aircon!) I was thinking since our hermit crabs are mostly from the SEA countries (as what I learned from the people at HaHa crabs), they should be able to withstand slightly higher temperatures. Stats like this should be flexible according to region. What do you think?
And yes, to answer your question, the sponge is reachable by the crabs. Was trying to find moss or sea sponge but could not find any so I settled for those filter sponges until I can find a better alternative. The reptile eco earth jeera puts in his tank sounds like a good alternative. I might check that out soon.
So far I have tried 4 second levels and settle for the last one I tried. I bought the first 2 from those shops selling bath furniture (mainly used to hold up soap or shampoo bottles) and the last 2 from Daiso. They are mainly held up by suction cups or magnet. One tip I learned from trial and error was that it's good to get a level with holes at the bottom so when you spray water on the sponge, water doesn't collect at the bottom. Can get quite yucky.
I have 6 crabs now and only one is still in his painted shell (from Haha Crabs). He refuses to change out of it. Have both of yours changed out of theirs? I am trying to find more shells too. Just a few days ago, one crab (the biggest of them) was picking shell fights with the rest. He only stopped when I placed him on my 2nd level to shell shop. He finally found one he liked, changed into it, and became less agressive. It's hard to find unpainted shells in SG! I like the ones at Naples but it's really expensive to ship them over. Tell me if you find any shops selling them! I know the corner aquarium shop at Serangoon sells them but my hermies are too small for them!
This is the shell I like from Naples! Isn't it a beauty?!?

That is some perlatus you have there! Does it bully the rest of the crabs? I was considering getting one but am afraid it would 'bully' the rest. How does he interact with the rest of the 10!
Speaking of which ... WOW TEN! I feel itchy to buy a few more now! Eco Earth sounds like a good idea. How is your experience with it? Does it get moldy fast? Do you have to change it often? Do the hermies like to nestle in it? I am thinking of using that to replace my sponge on the 2nd level.
Ha ha. The first time I went to that Serangoon store, they were proudly displaying all their hermit crabs at the corner entrance. Now when I go, they have to take the crabs from a pail in the back for us to choose! Is that the same store we are going to? It's called P** M*** and near the kopitiam. I am now wondering if the rest of the aquariums there sell hermies too but just keep it out back.

yeah its the same shop that we r talkin abt. my perlatus is a big bully. she will push away anything along her way. and if other small ones r restin on the driftwood... if they blockin her way. she will push dem down. other den tat she wont go n disturb the smaller ones. but rather the smaller ones all like to go near her.
i agree that its hard to find seashells here. i bought some at the corner aquarium u mention. its was $2 for 1 super small shell. which may be afew only cents over in the US. i just got a 3" silver turbo shell from a local ebay seller. and it cost $27... maybe next time we all can combine shipping when we r orderin from us online store like petdiscounter or naples.
i just cant stop buying when i see more uniques colors hermit like pink or even blue. as for the eco earth its call ESU Reptile Jungle Mix. i was asking for repitle moss at PM den the boss show me this. it consist bits of tree barks... moss and earth. it doesnt contain cedar or pine so it should b safe for hermit. it doest get mouldy but it can get abit messy. i dun mind as long they likes it.

A number of people have been asking me how much it cost me to set up my tank.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v16/savvymunkey/Hermies/hygro.jpg
Let's have a run down.
Tank = $15
Sand = $2.80
Water dish = $2
Push Cart = $2
2nd level = $2
Bamboo screens = $4
Terracota soilder = $2
Pebbles = $2
Stacked stones = $2
Driftwood = $1
Tree = $5
Thermo/Hygro meter = $26.50
That totals to SGD$66.30 (without the crabs). The bulk of the cost is due to the thermo/hygrometer! At least I don't have to pay sterilization or vet fees... :P

Actually the ideal place to put it would be as close to the level of the hermit crabs as possible for a more accurate reading since the temperature and humidity in the tank itself may vary too. I've seen others who put it on the sand itself!
If you notice my 'tree' is higher than the guage too. So far none of them managed to escape so I am crossing my fingers for that too. Not sure if you can see but I have a transparent lid on the tank as well.

My bad then. The colour and eye shape on the crab coupled with the name led me to think it was perlatus.
In any case, Crabs, fujitsu from this thread (http://www.ministryofpets.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=11331&pid=330529&st=80&#entry330529) claims to have tiny straws. You find out more from him.
May I know why you are interested in Straws? This species of hermit crabs need enough saltwater to completely submerge themselves in. I've seen a crabitat where the owner custom made a 'beach' for it so it can bathe in the salt water, staying there for hours! Nice! Maybe an idea for your crabitat in the near future?

I wanted to go last night to PM get more!!! But my friend met me too late and I remembered the last time I went, they closed early... So I didn't go in the end. Anyone knows what time they close anyway?
Thought you have your own special concoction of hermit crab food? If you bought the food from PM, I know which one you are talking about. Food pellets like right?
Did they have new stock? Or is it an old batch? My friend got a pink and blue crab from there the other day. I want different colours too...
I am thinking of going to Qian hu one of these days to check it out...

eh it was stated on the website that they close at 9pm. but a frd told me sometimes 9plus they r still open if there's still customer. i saw the $3 per pack food also. its a transparent with a "hermit crab food" label stick onto it right? but i bought hikari crab cruisine instead. once in awhile they will have nice color... must really squat down there n choose. i think ur frd is luckily. i went down quite afew times before i got my pink n blue. but mine is not the whole crab... only the big pincher n the left hind leg got the color.

yeah i have my own concoction but they can't finish and it turned bad. so i bought some more so that they can eat. i bought the clear pkt of food that's $3 bux cos it seems easier for them to eat.

How do you ask the crab not to drink bathing water? I heard there are certain bathing water that are not safe for the crab's consumption.
So if you bath the crab in it and it take a drink, what happens?

its doesnt matter if the crab drinks bathin water. but may i know wat ur bathing water refers to? i use water treated by stress coat n aqua salt for bathin. stress coat contains aloe vera so its not suitable for drinking water but its perfectly fine n aids them when they r molting. little of it during bathin is fine. bathin the crab or not is very subjective. some say need but some say bathing the crab will add extra stress to them. bathing the crab once a week is fine. not more den that...

they have shells there but its all tun shells which i find it not suitable for although tun shells r said to b suitable for hermit. the opening is very big but the spiral part for hermit to hold its abdomen on is very narrow. and it very thin n transparent n crack easily. they used to have shark eyes n whales eyes... not sure now have or not. the last time i only saw tun shells. all shells r $1... very cheap... the rainbow aquarium beside PM sells shells also... saw it last fri... they have quite alot of turbo shells. its 3 for $10 and 1 for $3.50. i dint buy it before its either too small or too big for my hermies.

chinyuan, i got some questions on perlatus since u have been keeping them for 2 yrs. many pple find its rather difficult for them to survive their molt due to their size and most die after 1 yr when they r going to molt. and urs actually molted twice! im thinkin issit becos u have been using marine salt instead of aquarium salt. so maybe it aids them in their molting better. did u provide a deep salt water dish for them to fully submerge? how big is ur perlatus tank? and how abt the humidity? u kept it constant at 80%? and how deep is ur substrate and what substrate u r using? paiseh so many questions...

using sand or coral chips would be better cos its more natural and coral chip is a good soruce of calcium for them as well

my hermit seems to love the ketapang leaves i added into the tank. they are eating it. dried leaves used by fish keeper to give black water effect for their fish tank. known as magic leaves for their medicinal properties

i think most aquarium will have it. i got mine from petmart at serangoon north. they have a variety of colours to choose from. i got a 10kg light blue color pack at $20 before. but in the end i change my substrate to sand. cos lazy to wash the gravel... for sand i can just throw away... but if its the gravel i find it quite wasteful if i have to throw n keep buyin new gravel... if im not wrong haha selling those gravel in very small packs at $2 rite? i think petmart sells smaller pack which is afew times more only for $2 or $3...

if u wanna put coral chip or crushed coral in ur tank

there is a reason why they are hermit crabs and not crabs.
They are shy and like to hide in their shell.

hermit r like dat... once something/someone move closer. they will quickly retract into their shell. but afew sec later they will peek out n continue wif wat they r doin. maybe u can stay still for a few more sec n u can see then peekin out. hermit r nocturnal animals. if u happen to wake up in the middle of the night. u can see them in actions. u may wan to try giving them a light mist. after misting they will become more active.

noting to wori
they need abt 7 day - 10 day to get use to the tank n u~
so it bery normal for them to b like tis~
u can speed up on their active on u
but i think better dum try
cos i dumno wat will happen next time
