England is easy enough to backpack since you are already an English speaker. England is very tourist friendly as in you can get guides at almost any tourist entrances. The tube has very detailed guides and you can find booklets (THICK) at every tube station for bus services that service from that tube station.
But it can get rainy and gloomy (not surprising from a nation of people who uses weather reports as greetings). Summer is the best time to visit as day light stretches to almost 16 hours daily. However, summer nights can be amazingly chilly especially in the country side. And oh, day light in Winter can be as short as 8-10 hours. Almost all interesting places are free or has minimum charge if you are a student (remember to bring a student card or international student card).
Summer time has alot of festivals (check out Glastonbury next year which i am planning) in various parts of United Kingdom. Visit Ireland, Scotland and Wales if you are up to it (EasyJet, EasyTrain, etc are your best friend).
