Possible ? |ce Sep 16th, 09, 03:50 PM #1 (permalink)
Is it possible to plug 2 x 2.1 speakers into a sound card ?

Meaning one Creative X-Fi sound card powering up an Edifier C3 and an Altec Lansing MX5021.

Any pros and cons ?

Yes possible.

Just plug the "weaker" speaker to the rear channel output of the soundcard.

You will have a 4.2 system.

Pros: 4 channel on the cheap and adjustable bass (if the 2.1 on the rear channel has adjustable bass).

Cons: Need to calibrate front and rear channels manually. Possible mismatch of audio due to different sat speakers.

Plug the weaker speakers to the rear channel?

But which of them is the weaker speakers ?

If plug to rear channel , then the woofer will be used anot ?

Why can't I plug both of them to the front speakers ... Hence I have 4 speakers up front and 2 gigantic woofers driving the bass .... Excellent ....

But can the sound card take it ? Or it doesn't really matter ....

Reason why you plug weaker speakers to rear channel is because if you are watching movies with surround audio, the rear channels do not need as much juice since the most important audio is from the front channels.

Its up to you which speakers you prefer in front and rear.

Woofer will still translate the low frequency to vibration. After all the audio is still fed thru the woofer which contains the amplifier for 2.1 systems.

You can plug both to front channel using a splitter but its redundant, you might as well have invested in a more powerful 2.1 system. You will also have issues of 2 different speaker sets harmonizing together.

This is independant of the soundcard since all it does is feed the audio to the built in amplifier of both the 2.1 speaker sets you have.

Thing is ... I heard the MX5021 in action and I was impressed but at that point of time, nobody was selling it. Hence i waited ...

Then came along the Edifier C3 ... I went to the seller's place and was also impressed with the bass's effects so I bought the Edifier C3.

Currently, 2 persons are selling the MX5021 in this forum and because I was impressed with it the 1st time round, I don't mind buying another 2.1 system and put it together with my Edifier C3 to have 4 speakers and 2 woofers

Then yes it's possible, tried that b4.

In the end use splitter instead as the front-rear combination a bit of problem sometimes, like some games don't use rear channel so even though it's quad speaker mode the rear speaker got no sound, even though already set properly such that it will have sound when using WMP. Then when playing surround material, got rear sound coming from front... z.

Oh ya my Audigy's rear channel has better sound quality than the front channel, just a trivia. But both sux and I don't use them now anyway.

So if the sound card is able to power 7.1 system ... is it correct to say that if I buy 7 x 2.1 system speakers, it will simply just power them up without any hitches ?

Wrong. The sound card has no limits to the number of speakers you connect to it. This is because the amplifier on multimedia speakers (usually in the woofer) does the powering. I mentioned in my post above that the soundcard only transfers the sound. It does not produce enough power to drive bigger speakers adequately.

You can connect as many speakers as you like as long as you have enough splitters and speaker sets. However as you add more speakers, the signal from the soundcard will start to degrade since it only has a weak onboard amplifier for transmitting the audio signal only.
