Hi, i was wondering which set of 2.0 is a pretty decent all rounder for music and movies as my dad is looking to throw away our floor stands cos mom complaining that wood disintegrating everywhere

No 2.1 speakers cos mom sure complain/nag/blah blah. And will most likely be connected to tv/stereo.

I was thinking either the Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 or the Audio Engine A5. Are those recommended ? Thanx. Budget up till about $500.

PS: if i'm making any noob comments please enlighten me

Audioengine A5, period. The Wharfedales will need an amp to power them, the A5s don't. Granted, the diamonds are probably cheaper than the A5s, but when you add in the cost of an amp, it'll be quite a fair bit more. It's best to get a good amp ($$$) to power them, rather than getting some cheapo amp, cos they'll sound like garbage with lousy amps.

Either way, it will still cost above $500. A5s retail for $540. About the wharfedale, i think the speakers alone go for high 300+

Yeah, i did note that the A5's were active speakers and were more inclined towards them so i could shift my reciever back to my room But i just got my hand on What Hi-Fi Oct, and the new Wharfedale Diamond 10.1 just won their group test, dethroning their long time budget king, the Dali Lektors ! Too bad i dun think its in sg yet

Currently using a Marantz SR5002 reciever

so you already have a receiver. that means you can go ahead and get those passive speakers instead of active ones.

This gives you much more versatility than just getting a single input active speaker set, instead of having to swap cables everytime you need to use a difference source.

I dont know how big is your room but 90watt output from your receiver should be able to fill up your room with decent sound better.

Trawl echoloft and xtremeplace, you might be able to score some floorstanders within your budget too.

You mean sound bars ? i heard their sound quality not that good... but can consider ba. Any good ones to recommend ?

Don't bother with soundbars at your budget.. Better off with the wharfedales IMO. have to say that their latest series looks nice and sounds decent I guess. previously i liked usher s520 as a budget choice so you can have a listen to those as well. or maybe a 2nd hand quad 11l if u like something more dynamic for ur movies. the usher can be had 2nd hand as well since its been launched quite a while ago.

btw the ae also has a passive speaker if u happen to like ae5.. but i am not sure on the price. can see them at audiotrio.

I'm also looking for a good all rounder 2.0, but i want something not too big... the a2 seems to fit my taste.
