Tip on speakers placement - courtesy of Rogers wwenze Sep 30th, 09, 08:48 AM #1 (permalink)
"Loudspeakers should never be placed tightly in the corners of rooms. While this dramatically increases bass in one frequency band it produces a cancellation 'suck-out' in the next. Though certain types of music may be artificially enhanced the effect is very unnatural as can be heard in reproduced speech as a 'boomy' or congested quality. Placing stand mounted speakers on the floor will create a similar effect.

If speakers have to be placed close to the corners of a room they should be placed asymmetrically with respect to the two walls, that is at a different distance from the side and rear wall. Careful listening and experimentation with positions can minimise the effects of room reflections on bass reinforcement and cancellation."

Rogers International Ltd.

No wonder my speakers sounded so powerful yet harsh when put on the floor. I guess this is also saying don't put speakers next to side walls too.

Althought I know these facts, space constraint prevent me from doing anything about it.

Continued from the webpage:

"Reflections at high frequencies from any large flat sound-reflecting surface (wall, mirror, furniture) can adversely affect stereo imaging. Soft furnishings and fabrics can be used to change reflections if the speakers cannot be conveniently repositioned."

Maybe put some cloth behind one wall to change the reflective properties hence achieving asymmetic placement as mentioned earlier at least.

i didn't read the articles pasted above, but would think they apply more to a typical american sized music room, where most of us have much smaller rooms. particularly in this forum, i would expect a lot of us to listen near-field where reflections actually shldn't bother us as much. secondly, speaker design matters a lot in placement so best to look at your own manufacturer's recommendations as some may want more bass reinforcement (e.g. gurus), while others need more space, etc.

if u guys have muddled sound or loose bass, imo quite a few things can be done about it even if u can't do repositioning. imo, repositioning is really to create a balanced soundstage (both LR and depth) more than controlling such boom. things like racks, stands, isolators and spikes can help alot, even cables and cords also make a difference to tighten up the sound and the result can be quite drastic. a lot of people underestimate how important is vibration control.

i wrote this mainly due to the first comment by wwenze about standmount speakers on the floor, imo part of the harshness is from reflection, but the other part is by vibration, especially apparent on thin parquay flooring.

imo things like bass trap works but only really effective if u know which freq u want to attack else u end up cutting off some freq that u do want, but diffusers are more subjective as the results vary more widely depending on the application.
