Just a thought... how instruments can sound as if they're behind the speaker wwenze Oct 9th, 09, 08:13 PM #1 (permalink)
Normally, one would think that speakers are the one making sound, hence the sounds should sound like they come from the speakers.

But what the speaker does is reproducing sound recorded by the microphone.

And the microphone is placed in front of the instruments. Hence giving us this scenario:

Noticed that without the mic the sound would otherwise hit the man.

With the mics facing the instruments, the sound pushes the mic's diaphragm inwards to produce a positive voltage when it hits.

Now replace the mics with speakers facing the man.

The speakers' diaphragms move outwards to push a sound towards the man when a positive voltage is applied, effectively continuing the sound path.

And because the sound recorded by the mic has "travelled" the distance, this distance, if the sound is accurately produced, shows up in the reproduced sound.

Of course, I'm not talking just about distance, but the interaction of the sound that gives it the realism. A more extreme example of this would be records of echo.

This would also mean that soundstage can be easily faked with processing.

How is this? Is this just another brain fart or a late idea that has been floating around the world for ages?

Yeah what you call 'soundstage' can be faked using a variety of methods.

Where did you learn this from?

Your theory makes sense but I can't comment as I know nothing about sound engineering. I think I heard it mentioned that true recording of depth is quite rare nowadays and is usually done artifically.

One of the real recordings I know of is "If I could sing your blues" by Sara K, where the trumpet was purposely situated 10 feet away from the microphone. If you have that track, see if you can tell the difference vs other tracks.
