Ghetto Tweaks. weib Oct 20th, 09, 06:03 PM #1 (permalink)
My A5 was farting badly on my desktop was looking for something to eliminate the vibration.
Wasn't ready to pay 40 bucks for 4 spikes, wanted something cheaper but still effective.

Since I was at SLT to reterminate my cables, i went to look around the shops while I wait.

Lo and behold!

Total $4 dollars.
Took 2 programming books and i'm audio bliss.
Farting no more~ bass extension is much deeper now and its tighter!

Nice one

You could have gotten some stick-on rubber feet from a supermarket or hardware shop though. Looks less ghetto and proably could absorb more vibration.

lol interesting item to use for vibration absorption.

I using Isopad. $45 though but they are thick(make the speakers more ear level) and makes the bass tighter and deeper. It look so simple right? If someone can make such a thing, should sell very well and the profits would be great!!

Should never put bookshelves speakers directly on top of a desktop. At least get those rubber feets but I have a hard time locating them last time so i got the isopad instead. Those rubber feet that is available at those diy shop look low quality and very thin.

Weib's hands look very rough. Do hard labor one ah? haha....

actually I saw this at IKEA, damn solid plus the wood sandwich a rubber.

40 bucks then at the bottom you just elevate with 5 flat head screws - 4 corner and 1 in the middle.

Try viewing this old echoloft thread for some tips.. they discussed the ikea butcher boards but they also DIY their own isopads.
ikea butcher board

Alot of people also seemed to prefer using daiso gel at $2 than blutack for speakers. xtremeplace has a thread on that.

as for rubber feet, i found them easily at hardware shop when i first started out, but i don't particularly find them a big improvement.

unfortunately in my experience, i find that the original stuff (my first gd experience is from taoc where some other brands did not impress) really makes a difference sonically, whereas these DIY tweaks are more negligible though it does help. i suppose if you can construct something low cost with 50% of the benefit, that would be a bonus already.

i've not tried the ikea board though. someone i know was recommended to use it on his $25k speaker by the manufacturer to absorb excess bass energy.. similarly one of the closer shops i know recommended me to buy a ikea table-top (1 of their famous side-tables which comes in red/black/white) to place my power-amp.

My school of philosophy leads to the thinking that if a 25k speaker requires $50 tweaks to have substantial improvements yet somehow it wasn't tried by the makers or isn't included in the product as a fixed/removable feature, something is very wrong.

Various ways to intepret this statement.

wow. These isopad look almost like the ones I bought. I bet it is more than 50 percent cheaper than mine.

I dun really understand y one must put an amp on a chopping board. Does an amp vibrate in the first place? Are there any moving parts? Same with a dac. So if u put a cd player on the board, I can understand. But an amp? enlighten me pls.

One more thing about the chopping board($40), I rather pay $5 more and buy a set of 4 isopads.

The amp itself does not vibrate, but vibrations from the speaker can travel to the amp and affect the sound.

(BTW transformers do vibrate, and at more chim and tiny level, transistors vibrate too)

Putting it on the chopping board has similar effect as putting it on audiophile racks, but 80% cheaper.

But but, on one hand, some people couple their gear to the ground via spikes, on the other hand others decouple them via suspension and mass loading. So which is better? ^^

Oh maybe I should add... decoupling speakers can have an effect of low-pass-filtering also. People into cars may understand this better.
