Microsoft, Intel and nVidia form the PC Gaming Alliance

Posted Feb 15th, 08 at 03:57 AM by bbmf
PC gaming is about to be backed in a big way by major companies joining forces to give it a significant push.
Big boys including Microsoft, Intel and nVidia are forging the PC Gaming Alliance, which will be unveiled in full just prior to GDC in San Francisco next week.

Additional specific aims outside of the general push aren’t known yet, but it’s the second such major initiative to boost PC gaming, coming in the wake of Microsoft’s own Games for Windows game plan.
According to Mercury News, “…the consortium will coordinate and expand those efforts [Games for Windows] to improve the experience of playing games on computers.

Microsoft researchers to use "information epidemics" to distribute software

Posted Feb 14th, 08 at 10:26 PM by bbmf
Milan Vojnović and colleagues from Microsoft Research in Cambridge, UK, want to make useful pieces of information such as software updates behave more like computer worms: spreading between computers instead of being downloaded from central servers. The research may also help defend against malicious types of worm, the researchers say.Software worms spread by self-replicating. After infecting one computer they probe others to find new hosts. Most existing worms randomly probe computers when looking for new hosts to infect, but that is inefficient, says Vojnović, because they waste time exploring groups or "subnets" of computers that contain few uninfected hosts.Smart strategiesVojnović's team have designed smarter strategies that can exploit the way some subnets provide richer pickings than others. The ideal approach uses prior knowledge of the way uninfected computers are spread across different subnets. A worm with that information can focus its attention on the most...

Launch Postponement of the KIZUNA (WINDS)

Posted Feb 14th, 08 at 09:56 PM by bbmf
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd.
Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency would like to announce that we have decided to postpone the launch of the super high-speed Internet satellite "KIZUNA" (WINDS) by H-IIA Launch Vehicle No. 14 (H-IIA F14) as an incompatibility was found with the gas jet thruster for second stage attitude control when propellant loading operations for the thruster were being carried out last night. Since it is expected to take time to deal with the problem, we decided to postpone the launch.

The launch was originally scheduled for February 15, 2008 (Japan Standard Time, JST.)

The new launch date will be announced as soon as it is determined.

Should Windows XP Be Saved?

Posted Feb 14th, 08 at 04:28 PM by bbmf
Microsoft is planning to discontinue most sales of Windows XP on January 30th--effectively ensuring that just about any Windows machine you buy from July 1st onwards will run Vista, whether you want it to or not.
Lots of folks would prefer to maintain the XP option. And our colleagues at InfoWorld have set up a clever site called SaveXP.com to serve as a gathering place for XP supporters. It's got a save-XP petition which more than 70,000 folks have signed, articles, podcasts, links, and a lot more.
Head over there to check it out and, if you so choose, put your name on the petition. Or take our little survey on XP and its fate--I'll report back on the results once a quorum of folks have voted...

Throwable displays

Posted Feb 14th, 08 at 04:02 PM by bbmf
Nintendo's Wii system has changed the nature of video games with its ability to precisely monitor the position and attitude of its game controllers. Now Philips wants to go step further. The consumer electronics giant has patented a robust throwable display in the shape of a ball which shows a moving image while being tossed around a room.
The position and movement of the ball are tracked by a stationary controller, while the position of players relative to the ball is monitored using ultrasound. Philips says the system should lead to a new generation of "whole body" games.
An example of a possible game involves two groups of players throwing the ball to each other without allowing a third group to catch it. Parts of the room could be programmed to be out of bounds and the ball could determine and show when these areas are breached. The ball would display encouragement, instructions or characters in the game. An interesting idea, but Philips might need to get some...

Wal-Mart trims HD DVD player lineup

Posted Feb 14th, 08 at 12:49 PM by bbmf
Wal-Mart has begun phasing out two of its three HD DVD players that have been offered in stores and through its website in past months.

Industry sources told TG Daily that Wal-Mart is phasing out the RCA HDV5000 as well as the Venturer SHD7000 models. The RCA player has been offered exclusively in stores for initially $399, was then reduced to $299 and is currently sold on the clearance rack for $148. The Venturer device is available online and carries a clearance price of $167, down from $199.98.
Store employees from three different Wal-Mart locations in the Chicago area confirmed that the stores will not be restocking these models.
However, the company apparently plans to keep one Toshiba player in its lineup for “at least 4 months”, we heard. The HD-A3 player is currently sold in stores for $148.
There was no official comment from Wal-Mart about its HD DVD and Blu-ray offering.

Netflix teases PS3 and Xbox 360 movie streaming

Posted Feb 14th, 08 at 12:20 PM by bbmf
Streaming videos to game consoles could be coming soon to Netflix customers. The company is surveying its customers and asking if they would likely use a streaming service to Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles. The streaming wouldn’t cost any more money, but would require a special install disc costing $3.
The Netflix survey was posted at seanbajuice.com and reads, “Now you can watch movies from Netflix instantly by using your Internet-connected Playstation 3. Simply insert a special Netflix disc into your PS/3 to enable instant movie streaming. The disc is available from Netflix for a one-time fee of $3.”
The survey then asks if anyone in the household would be likely to use such a survey. There are five options from definitely not to definitely would.
Netflix says streaming customers would be able to watch over 7000 movies and television series in as little as 30 seconds. Currently Netflix offers streaming video on all of its plans. The cheapest...

Cayago Magnum Turns Navy Seals Into True Aquamen

Posted Feb 14th, 08 at 11:03 AM by bbmf
The Cayago Magnum is the latest in Seabob's line of underwater propulsion devices, and one look at the statistics will tell you that riding this bad boy will either kill you or give you the ride of your life. Perhaps that is why they are pitching it to rugged military professionals and not pasty nerds.
The limited edition Cayago is powered by 30 CAYAGO-Power High-Energy Li-Ion accumulators with a 10 speed electric motor that will provide continuous operation for up to 4 hours-even at extreme depths. A comprehensive navigation and location technology system is also thrown in for good measure-which will make it perfect for long range missions. Exact pricing details have not been announced, but if you think you are up to the challenge expect to pay well over $14,000 if it ever makes it to the consumer market.
