    Talking Project Log: Kanade

    Overview

    This will be my first major build in 6 years.

    Kanade will be replacing Nami, a dual Opteron 290, Tyan Thunder K8WE based rig who is credited for near 24x7 operations with absolutely no serious hardware faults since her conception.

    Big shoes to fill. Incidentally, Nami was born when BF2 first came out. Now BF3 is round the corner, and Kanade will rise up to the ocassion.

    Edit: On the name... This will be a detraction from my tradition of naming all my machines with a female name starting with N.

    Her precedessors were Noriko, Natasha, Netanya, Norumi, Nikita, and Nami.

    "Kanade" translates to the action of playing an instrument. With her inception, she will be the first major rig I will have built that will actually be able to run almost silent (by my standards).

    Nami had a dual volted fan system with toggle switches for the subsystems. That didn't work too well though as some fans were not happy with the reduced voltage and would stall.

    Kanade will have PWM control for high pressure fan subsystems which will allow me to balance energy consumption, performance, and noise generation.

    That will also give me impetus to replace that 12 year old audio system I have plugged into my rig with a nice set of Dynaudio MC15s and external DAC.

    ==

    Preliminary components.

    Motherboard/CPU: Asus ROG Gene Z v3/Intel i7 2600k

    Gonna sit in place until Sandy E has been in the market for a few months and stabilized. Will be replaced by a dual socket 2011 if/when the technology and product matures. Had enough of bleeding edge/bleeding wallet.

    This might just be cute. A micro ATX board in a chassis as large as this one

    RAM: ?

    Brand not determinate yet. Probably GSkills kit.

    GPU: Asus HD6990

    Got one first to see if it will drive 7680x1440 reliabily. I am not an FPS nut so I might be able to get by on a single unit.

    PSU: Corsair AX1200 x2

    One unit will be unused until the next Gen GPUs are released, or I decide to get another 6990.

    Radiators: HWLabs Black Ice GTX 480 x2 + HWLabs Black Ice GTX/SR1 560 x2

    Topology (Single Loop): // Reservoir -> Dual MCP 655 -> 560 stack -> [Peltier?] -> CPUs/mobo -> 480 set -> GPUs -> Reservoir

    Overkill? Definitely. The peltier is something to look at for the future. I came upon a surplus AIO 120mm rad. It might be just the thing to suck heat from a 100W peltier TEC. It should be able to bring the coolant down a few degrees. I could sandwich the TEC between CPU and WB... but then failed TEC would mean instant CPU roast. If the TEC fails when it's in an auxillary role, it won't hurt anything.

    Pumps: 2x MCP655 + EK Dual Top + EK 400mm X2 integrated reservoir

    Two pumps should be enough to handle the loop. I think. 400mm x 60mm rad wil be directly attached to the pump. I should have bought pumps with tach instead of speed control. Gotta figure out a way to check for pump failure.

    Blocks: ?

    Undetermined at this time. Leaning towards EK kit for the bling though XSPC's latest got my eye.

    I will not be water cooling the 6990 for now until the next gen cards are released. Seems a waste for a card rapidly reaching EOL.

    Fans: San Ace 9CR1212P1G03 and Scythe (Nidec Japan Servo) Gentle Typhoon AP15s

    Being nearly silent, the GT AP15s will be set to always on.
    The massive San Aces will be toggled, and will be managed with PWM speed control.
    These are twin motor fans, and each bank of 4 will be controlled via a physical DPST switch.

    Topology:
    Top: // Outside Air -> Scythe -> 480 radiator -> San Ace -> Chassis -> Outside
    Pedestal: // Outside Air -> 560 radiator -> Scythe -> San Ace -> 560 radiator -> Outside

    Fan intakes are positioned to suck cold air. Heated air will exit away from the intakes to avoid reducing radiator efficiency.

    Case: CaseLabs TH10 + Pedestal

    Big is beautiful. Nuff said See the pics.

    CaseLabs TH10 + Extended Pedestal Unboxing

    FedEx had a present for me.

    Packed very well. Not a scratch.

    Did I mentioned they pack their kit real well?

    Radiator mounts for 2x size 560s.

    The front end. Plenty of front bays. Who needs a seperate NAS with this beast?

    Slots for two power supply units. Reverse ATX option was selected. The removable back plate has 10 PCI slots for the most massive boards including the gargantuan HPTX SR-2 by EVGA.

    Motherboard compartment open and pedestal side panel removed. The fan holes below are 140mm cutout. A size 560 radiator goes down there. The San Ace 300 cfm monsters are put in for show

    Angle shot of the power supply side. Motherboard tray is removed. The horizontal accessory beams are optional. I have mounted a pair of 120mm fan mounts on the bottom beam. These line up perfectly with the side panel vents.

    Straight on photo of the power supply side.

    Shot showing the removable motherboard tray. Rubber feet are included in case you want to operate the tray naked on your table for long periods. Baseplate is removable for heatsink mounting plate access. Yes those are spring mounted thumbscrews

    I might run these... If I were a deaf man.

    LGA2011 will be an eventuality. Going for matured hardware in the meantime.

    The Gene Z will be moved to a HTPC role when LGA2011 matures. It's all planned out. (I hope)
