GodZyla - The Making [Changing HDD/POWER LEDs] KleoZy Apr 27th, 09, 09:16 PM #1 (permalink)
If you worry to damage or to void the warrenty of the actual cable headers of your new purchase case, you can always use savage cable headers from old casing.

these is what you need.
  • A pair of scissors
  • A pair of nose plier (or you want to get crimping tools which I find them not necessary)
  • 2 Pin molex holder
  • 2 pin molex
  • savage header cables from old casing.
  • 3.0 - 3.2 VDC Leds

Kindly take note of the header.. HDD LED indicators use 2 pin and POWER LED indicator in most standard motherboard use 3 pin.

You dont have to get exactly those cables 1 to 1, as in HDD must be HDD, POWER must be POWER, so long you understand how your mobo headers are to, which is for which connector and which is GND and which is +
down here I am using a reset switch that has two pin.

Stripe the wires and give it some good twist.

Now push the wire downwards, I will explain later as why doing this.

Now place it to the molex pin. I did mentioned to push the wire downwards right? Reason for this, when you crimp, the crimping will be on the skin of the wire pushing the bear wires to the pin and not crimping only the bear wires.. hope I make sense here..

In addition, by crimping on the skin of the wire, you enforce the strength, this type of crimping is stronger as the wire will not come off from the pin that easily as compared to just crimp on the bear wires itself

This is how it looks like when it's done.

now place the pins into the molex holder.. take note that I have indicate which polarity the wires should go. normally the colored ones are positive and the white ones are negative (GND)

this is how it looks like when it's done.. of course this is only for demo purpose.. you will need longer savage cable headers for the actual mod..

Plug in the LED .. LED feet itself when you buy them.. one leg will be longer than another. the longer leg is Positive and shorter is for Negative.

In addition, why not solder the LED to the cable, reason is.. I can change LED if spoil or change it as and when I like to change collors lol

Done, plug to your mobo header, put the LED in and power up.. you can change LED as you like to, due to the 2 pin molex.

Hi, do you know the way to solder like 10 to 20 LED onto a PCB board & work with a 12V supply?

Thanks.

You will need to connect them in serial if you want them to blink all at once.. if you are talking about modular blink then you probably need to go SLT to find those circuit PSB hobby kit to play with.. or you can ask those uncle located at this store call continent. They are pretty friendly.

Hope this helps! Make sure you use a 1/4watts 750ohms resistor on the positive cable.

Hi, so every 4 LEDs will require 1 resistor & connect to 12V? Can I have 4 sets x 4 LEDs & connect to one 12V molex?

Thank you.

I think no need, 1 resistor is enough for whole led serie... Theoretically the led has no resistance, the resistor there is to reduce the current in the circuit

TS: Thanks for the simple and nice mod as usual...
