3½" front panel with on/off/reset buttons herzberg May 4th, 09, 04:34 PM #1 (permalink)
Hi,

I'm thinking of using one of my floppy drive bay as a panel to house the on/off and reset buttons. I'm fine with using one of 5¼ inch bays too but it seems to be quite a waste of space.

Does anyone know if I can get such panels off-the-shelf? Or do I have to get my hands dirty and make one from scratch? Thanks!

three ways of doing it,

you can either do it yourself, which is not very difficult or pay someone to do the mod for you..

personally it's not that difficult to DIY plus is fun.. it only involves 4 cables only, 2 for power up and 2 for reset and the colored cables are positive (+) and the white cables are negative (-)

the colors applied on all casing headers for your info.

I believe for power is gray (+) and white (-)
and reset is blue (+) and white (-)

as for the switches, you can always purchase them at electrical part stores.. you can choose any design you like so long it's a 2 pin switch.
Never Say Never When You Have Not Even Try!!!

Anyway, for power on/off and reset switches, you do not really need to adhere to + or -
It's just a shorting of the two pins on the MB header

yeh take a look at KleoZys tutorial threads on this sub forum.

For ON/OFF button,

Just get those red black wires, switch from Sim Lim Tower, most to most cost around $2 - $3 , get a female 2 pin connector, (sold together with short wires) and just solder them all together and voila.

Dunno if momentary switch is a MUST though.

that's a good point. i think most ON/ OFF switch on a PC is momentary, if you get those toggle switch and when you switch it on your PC, after awhile it turns off again.

i may be wrong, can someone confirm this??

Yes both the on/off and reset buttons are simple push buttons. The circuit is closed only when you press it down.

Eh... I'm not into electrical stuff so I'm kinda lost here.

I guess the easiest way for me is to leave 2 exposed wires out at the front and touch them with each other whenever I want to start up my comp, like how they start stolen cars in movies.

On a serious note, from the replies here, I suppose I'll need to make this panel thingy myself. OK, so I'll need switches and wires.

I have spare wires lying around, so that anin't a problem. I'll probably need to get replacement switches to fit into the 3¼ bay height profile.

My current on/off switch is push type. A brief press powers on but if I hold it down for 2 sec or so, it powers off. So, is this the "momentary switch" or some kind of other switch?

A quick google query can be quite useful
Take a look at this for explanation

All the power switches today are momentary buttons. Short it quickly => power on/off. Short it for several seconds => forced power off. If you understand this then designing a switch or shorting the wires yourself would work the same.
