Question: How to repair screw 'holes' universe May 12th, 09, 11:11 AM #1 (permalink)
have a screw 'hole' that need to be repaired...
i know it don't sounds right, but can't think of another way to phrase it, lol

anyway, the hole resides @ the casing @ the PCI brackets, ie, to secure PCI cards onto the casing.

The problem is that the holes seems to be slightly enlarged and thus, unable to screw tight.

There are 2 things you can do I guess.

One is to retap to a bigger hole (so you need a bigger screw). This is probably the most hassle free way.

The other is to fill up the hole with something strong like epoxy or lead solder and retap that so it fits your original screw.

ok. doubt i can do this myself...
any idea who can i look for for solution 2 and roughly how much would it cost?

currently, i'm stuffing the hole with those white tapes (the one used to seal water leakages one) and screwing my card with the tapes...not perfectly tight, but still manage to hold...but only a temp solution

If you use one of your 2 nuts in between your crotch, of course free.. bag of nuts around 20 - 50cents depending on sizes.

Use contact adhesive (aka super glue). Go for the denser type.

Dab the glue onto the hole and let it dry abit till gummy. Then screw thru. Dont worry about the screw getting permanantly stuck since when you next unscrew, it will just crack the dried glue. Of course be careful not to let the glue contact any flat surfaces (pci bracket, screw head etc) otherwise you may have a harder time removing the screws/pci card.

most of the time the material is rather soft, if you wan another easier way, just buy a screw slightly bigger, best if its self tapping. then screw all the way in. It will form into the bigger thread size.

if i'm not wrong those screws that you tighten PCI cards are not in metric sizes.

if it's thick enough you can use helicoil to repair the thread.

in this case i think a nut below is the easiest.
