Foreigners to lose medical perks under Singaporeans-first policy bigsale Dec 11th, 06, 04:17 PM #1 (permalink)
Singaporeans-first policy unveiled by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong

Foreigners working in Singapore will have to pay more for medical services from October 2007 as part of new social policies giving priority to citizens, press reports have said.

Under a Singaporeans-first policy unveiled by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on December 3, healthcare subsidies in public hospitals will be slashed for non-citizens and rechanneled to meet the needs of the ageing local population.

Labour-starved Singapore depends heavily on foreign workers and professionals, ranging from construction workers and domestics to professionals and heads of multinational corporations and international banks.

Competition from foreigners for jobs is a politically sensitive issue in Singapore but officials maintain that "foreign talent" is essential to ensure the economy's long-term competitiveness.

The Straits Times newspaper said 875,000 foreigners and 480,000 permanent residents will be affected by the reduction of medical subsidies, which will save the government 36 million Singapore dollars (23 million US) a year.

The money will be ploughed back into subsidies for the elderly and other needy citizens. It will also be more expensive for companies to hire foreign workers because of higher medical insurance costs.

"This move will indicate to Singaporeans that Singapore citizens matter -- that's what it's all about," the Today newspaper quoted national trades union boss Lim Boon Heng as saying after the announcement on lower medical subsidies.

Singapore is not producing enough babies to replenish its native population, forcing the government to resort to foreign workers and immigration to plug a chronic labour gap.

The total population stands at around 4.48 million including foreigners, according to official statistics.

Public education costs for foreigners' children are also set to rise.

Singapore should spank themselves. No enough babies, then not many workforce and have to resort to foreign worker..Now foreign worker and non citizen can't get the medical subsidy or slashed, then the FT or FW will left this nation as no more attractive benefit for working or staying here........

Then, this will recycle back again and might even jian la as local production (baby) is low and if FT or FW leaving, then I think Ministers need to be the construction worker or road sweaper liao as how many Singaporean is willing to work under the hot sun.........They prefer to disturb the traffic of MRT.

Admin or mod, pls feel free to delete my post if my post is rather offensive.

LL lo... everything for foreigners also want to increase... i think once i'm done schooling here i'll migrate... coz now they are like trying to "eat" our money... ya, i noe that citizens are top priority, but we foreigners are already paying alot.. take school fees for example, we are paying dunno how many times more than a citizen... and as far as i noe, we do not have any single benefit.. want to buy HDB flat also cannot, must buy freehold condo/house... go polyclinic pay must standard price... and please do note, just becoz we come here to study doesn't mean that our family is rich or something... yes, some are $$$ loaded, but most are probably not... zzzz.... heck care liao la, since goverment liddat say, we foreigners suck thumb lo, want to complain also cannot, even if we do most likely they'll say "not happy go back ur country lo"...

sry if i sound offensive to anyone, but i'm sure some of the foreigners will feel the same way as i do...

875,000 + 480,000 = 1355000
$36 million = $36,000,000
So 1 person shall pay around $25.50/year more if i'm counting correctly... So assuming its a family of 5, 1 year the family will need to pay extra $127.50... Thats quite a lot if you count in the fees (school, medical, etc) that we have to pay, remember that we got no subsidies on anything...

Anyway, they stated that foreign talents are still essential, but now they are increasing the fees for foreigners, so, what are they trying to do?

The situation is amusing.

benefits taken away from foreigners. local employers need to pay more to insure their workers. but not a single cent is being channelled back to Singaporeans. Nada. Zilch.

Singaporeans see the banglahs and pdmms suffer so they feel more superior. fact is they are not better off before this whole wayang about Singaporeans come first.

if you don't wear White, you will NEVER EVER come first.
Why so serious?
