[News] Woman in coma after falling onboard SMRT bus Z_Dash Dec 19th, 11, 10:54 PM #1

SINGAPORE : A 54-year-old woman is in a coma after falling onboard an SMRT bus on Sunday night.

It is believed that Madam Ding Weibo fractured her skull after hitting her head on a seat.

The bus driver had apparently applied the brakes suddenly.

Madam Ding and her daughter had just boarded bus service No. 167 at about 8pm at Orchard Road, near Heeren shopping centre, when the driver jammed the brakes.

Both made a grab for the handrails, but the force of the brake threw Madam Ding onto the floor.

She was sent unconscious to the Singapore General Hospital.

Her daughter, Ding Xiao Sui, told Channel NewsAsia that Madam Ding suffered internal bleeding, and had to have an operation.

She is still in critical condition.

The family plans to lodge a complaint against the driver.

Her daughter said: "I was so scared and panicked, I did not know what to do. I kept calling for her, but there was no response. She was fine in the afternoon, she was shopping, and now she is in this state."

In a statement, SMRT said: "We are sorry the incident happened and investigations are on-going. We will be in touch with the family..."

To be fair with roads so packed nowadays and idiots dashing across the road, sometimes E-braking is unavoidable.

This is just damn suay, shit happens.

This i agree, SMRT will tend to chiong when approaching traffic light, especially amber.
SBST will apply brakes even when traffic light is still green.

I hope there is a "Dislike Post" button that I can click. FT or not, this issue is about the bus.

I believe, we should not be making insensitive comments or place the blame squarely on the bus driver either.

If you have bad experiences before on SMRT buses, it doesn't mean it will happen on all SMRT buses (unless you suay suay always kenna the same SMRT bus driver everytime). The bad experiences will just skew your personal opinion about SMRT buses and introduce bias in your feedback.

Let's wait till the investigations are done and see what's the findings.

Too many factors to consider. Someone might have braked hard in front of the bus or cut into it's path. No driver in his right mind steps on the brakes for no rhyme or reason.

For your information I have to agree... Recently, our public transport has been plagued by what I coined them as "Takumi", and bus ride for the past half a year has not been closed to pleasant. Sudden acceleration, sudden braking, sudden steering and such. Even seeing many examples of buses rushing out of bus stop without even bother looking for clearance.

At least 60-70% of the time, the drivers are of non-locals, and verifications are not merely done visually but by their names and their way of speech. I wonder how many of them are there on the road now.

I believe this is a concern we have to face and tackle now.
