Meat the culprit in food shortage kerrigan Apr 8th, 08, 05:48 PM #1 (permalink)
ST Forum Letter http://www.straitstimes.com/ST%2BFor...ry_224857.html

I think he has a point .. we should and we CAN reduce our meat consumption. If we just reduce by one day - just one day in a week without meat .. we can go a long way towards meeting this food shortage

Meat the culprit in food shortage

I REFER to Saturday's special report, 'Food shortage causes world eating disorder'. The current food shortage results from a complex combination of causes, and meat production is one of them.
Currently, we 6.6 billion humans eat more than 50 billion of our fellow land animals annually. These other animals consume more food than the entire human population, not to mention the inputs of water, pesticides and energy involved in meat production or the huge quantity of waste products, including greenhouse gases that these creatures produce during their unnatural and short lives.

Meat eating is indeed grossly wasteful of the crops we grow and of the resources required to grow those crops. For instance, more than 10kg of plant food is required to produce just 1kg of beef. Thus, a readily available way to address our current food shortage is to reduce our meat consumption or stop eating meat entirely. Of course, this would not address the chronic food shortage in poor countries that about 800 million of our fellow humans face due to poverty.

Yeah, I agree, it's not very objective since you will need vegetables to replace the meat that you do not consume, something not easily done..

Edit: I guess it applies more to active lifestyles.

load of bullcrap.

When theres a hike we buy tend to buy things in bulks to later realize that we don't need it then it spoils and we throw it away.
Just because plants can be genetically modified for bigger yield that we should jepodize our health by cutting off essential fats and proteins.

Author has shit for brains and obviously myopic.

he used "or" - obviously as a vegetarian he hopes for "stop entirely"

but his arguments for reducing meat consumption is very sound. that's what prompts me to support this ..
