yea too small le...
Way Of The Dragon: From a distance - 20 paddlers move in perfect rhythm to a muted drum beat, gracefully skimming the water's surface. Up close - determined grunts and strained sinews with oars in grip, dig vigorously into the water. The majestic head of the dragon fronts this contraption but the real heart lies just behind it, at the apex of the bow. Like a conductor of an orchestra, the drummer leads his crew with the calculated beat of his drum. Such is the realm of dragon boating.

I dunno, i was actually quite sympathetic to him before i read the email. After this, he comes across as abit of a whiner. The SAF contract he 2 eyes open big big sign one, if he didn't like the contract terms he could have not taken the scholarship, and given that his family is well off, he doesn't need the money either. He effectively deprived another person of the scholarship, a person who could have needed it to pursue his medical studies.

As for the unbreakable bond issue, i don't want to comment without further information, but i don't see how it can be unbreakable. Its just a matter of paying back your fees + allowance + perhaps a penalty.

For this particular case, i don't think you can really blame SAF for his death. SAF didn't force him to take the scholarship (and financially, he didn't need it either). You can say that SAF offers bond terms that put the bondee at a huge disadvantage, but you always have the choice of not signing. I also find it hard to believe that he didn't know army life sucks beforehand. Surely he will have met doctors who were already in service during his time studying, why didn't he break the bond then?

I know the popular sentiment around here (and many other SG oriented online forums) is to bash ah gong, and believe me i know that ah gong is not very good in many places, but i think for this case, its not fair to blame ah gong.

when he says unbreakable it could mean he tried to break but somebody inside did something to make it unbreakable.

from what i heard....

he wanted to do something on his own to exceed his current well established family. which is why he sign on to the NS(imprisonment). Being "promised" a proper career path but instead got bonded with extra years since SAF paid for his extended studies. apparently some studies which he was did not asked for and the ones he had asked for was not given to him.... a field that only the upppppper class get to even smell it. That is the medical world for you.

To the popint where he could no longer take our famous SAF's working environment He opt to break bond but was refused. He could have jolly well do some stupid stunt and get discharged which he did not do but end up in this predicament.

I am not entirely sure if SAF is so anal but to some extend it might have been caused by some bad rep his family had with SAF or someone inside SAF. Apparently his brother also AWOL during his time in NS.... shit happens. you know lah rich pple cocky.... SAF pple LL... got chance.... ha ha you hong kan liaoz.
play your a$$ until you smell of shit constantly

personally I see alternatives to get out of SAF.. but his DOCTOR status might be void.. that we are not sure. com'on the medical industry is closely link to the gahment...so either way he is almost 50% screwed...

he probably was too comfortable in life to start from zero again...

you know hor.. be doctor if you not rich enough
you very poor until like 35year old
so if they bond bond bond you until you old man liaoz and refuse you a specialised course that you were "promoised" you enfd up being a GP after 12 years of bond. In his case the bond was close to 15 year.

while all your peers are consultants you only beginer GP...

totally suck thumb for a person who is capable of achiving so much more.

what i find weird is how the bond can be just extended without his permission ... makes signing a contract totally pointless ... evrything in favour of one party ...

Don't know, as i said previously, i don't want to comment on the unbreakable bond thing due to the fact that i feel that we are missing alot alot of information.

He should know that SAF unless you got black and white, nothing 'promised' is promised. He could have refused to take the extended studies (speculation here, but seems reasonable), SAF cannot force him to go study mar.

I personally doubt the bad rep from his brother AWOLing previously or what nots will have had any effect on his treatment by the SAF. SAF is a huge organisation, and if you look at it as a monolithic entity, its probably very unlikely that the SAF as an entity would bear grudges and set out to try to screw him. Seems to be too giving too much credit to an organisation that half the time can't even find its own bloody paperwork. One possibility i can think of is that he pissed off a few of his direct superiors up the chain and they decided to make life difficult for him(very unlikely i think, but possible). But i still don't really see how the bond can be unbreakable.

As to the losing his doctor status due to breaking bond, i doubt SAF has this kind of sway over MOH. Would reflect very badly upon MOH if news of hits gets out right? Unless someone reveals more info, all this is just speculation lar. Occam's Razor currently leans towards the good Dr just being depressed rather than this huge conspiracy inside SAF and possibly MOH however.

FYI:

his family wanted to pay SAF 500k - 1mil, for breaking his bond, but somehow SAF rejected. Heard that SAF got not enough regular MO.
