I don't like flash, it's too bloated ...
Imagine you have lots of tabs, and everyone running a lot of embedded flash, it's taxing especially on netbook.

flash is nice and stuff but i hope all sites with flash have got a non-flash version.

sometimes i'm stuck on my ipod touch etc just becos the first splash page is flash, then i cannot navigate to the main page.
I am happily poor...

In anyway, like it or not, you'll likely to have at least 2 browsers in your computer, with IE being the must have for some obvious reason.
That's why there's a need to support Open Web Standards.
It just need M$ to say that it is committed to support the latest and upcoming Open Web Standards technologies, in current and future releases, and aim to put the legacy IE standards away soon, so developers can be "forced" to upgrade their websites.

And also increased market share growth of other OS(especially Linux as most linux distro include Firefox out of the box) will also play a part, as M$ include IE by default, indirectly developers see it as monopoly to develop on IE, which is way back in Open Web Standards.
