Vista tips MacClipper Aug 30th, 07, 10:31 AM #1 (permalink)
Trying out the x64 version now, seems to need lots of space (~12GB for OS alone) and lots of patching to get it working right. Tips which I found useful, just ignore if you already knew all these.

Disable hybrid sleep to cut time to sleep.

Place Power options menu with this simple js eg. use Wordpad and save the following as Power.js, place shortcut in Quicklaunch and give it a nice power icon.
(new ActiveXObject("Shell.Application")).ShutdownWindows();

Reducing disk thrashing, disable the offending services via msconfig. May be better to leave Superfetch on though.

Else use the Vista boot DVD and do a 1 min repair job to make the HD bootable.

Vista SP1 install took ~40 mins with innumerable reboots (lost count after a while) on a Q6600@3.4 with 4GB RAM, even longer than a clean Vista install itself - amazingly odious. Enabling Superfetch, all cores and max. RAM usage on Vista SP1 = boot times of ~1 min only from POST beep to Vista desktop appearance, not bad.

Further Vista testing presently halted, awaiting SP1 to reduce current 40% performance hit (though a synthetic bench),

Presently there can be a nasty long wait (almost a fulll minute) between the scrolling bars and the appearance of the desktop with no image being displayed - seems to be highly dependent on the video card, it's only 15s for a 6600GT though.

So sticking to VLC for now.

Click Start and then click Help and Support. The Help and Support window will open. You’re in. You’ve already gone further than many, many others.

I bet that you’ll find your answer after reading just one or two topics, without hunting around the entire Help system. Here’s why:

• A new voice for Windows. No, it’s not Clippy II. Help is easier to understand than in previous versions of Windows. It uses the language you use. You’ll notice the difference.

• Help topics originate from your questions. We created topics based on common questions and problems. This is why Help topic titles often reflect the question you are likely asking or the problem you're trying to solve. You’ll know it when you see it.

• Certain topics deliver certain types of content. Quick answers, procedures, troubleshooters, and FAQs give you answers quickly, while articles use a longer format to provide more information, best practices, and tips.

• Help has more than 750 illustrations and screen shots to show you the way.

Extra credit: Read all 2,000+ Help topics. Reward: You’ll know a lot about Windows.
Flaunt your skills as you help your family and friends with their computer problems.
