*.srt vs *.sub WhiteFox Jun 12th, 08, 01:01 PM #1 (permalink)
Not sure if this the correct forum. Mods, feel free to move

*.srt and *.sub, what are the advantages and disadvantages or both are the same, except by players compatibility?

They both have the same function and are text-based which makes it easier to edit. The difference would be the differing format. Disadvantage? I think it would be that fancy karaoke, animation, and running words are not supported.

The difference between these two?

SRT is basically a text-format file with the subtitles timed according to frames or milliseconds.
The great thing about this is that you can just open up the SRT file and change the subtitles if you want (I've been planning to do this for a whole movie sometimes - so that it comes off really funny to whoever doesn't understand the language) hehehe...
Next great thing about SRT is that - if you use Media Player Classic - you can just press CTRL+6 and then edit the subtitles directly!

Now, my favourite part about SRT is the ability to change how it looks/displays. If you don't know how to do this already, then in your Media Player Classic, right click on the video screen and click on Properties. Then you click on Subtitles -> Default Style (and then change it to your preferences).
Also, if you use DirectVobSub filter to auto-load your subtitle files, then you have to change it seperately (since MPC's in-built subtitle-renderer is different from Vobsub, thus has different settings). You can change it by - right clicking on the video screen, then Filters -> DirectVobSub(autoloading version) -> Properties -> Text Settings.

In VLC Media Player, you right-click the video screen, go to Miscellaneous --> Preferences --> Check the box at the bottom-right corner of that window that says "Advanced Options" --> Click/Expand the Video Option (in the menu) --> Subtitles/OSD --> in the "Text Rendering Module" box, choose "Freetype2 Font Renderer" --> make sure "Enable Sub Pictures" and "On Screen Display" are checked --> then expand the Subtitles/OSD menu to reveal "Text Renderer" Menu option --> Click on it, and then there you can choose your font/size/style/shadow/opacity. Now, MOST IMPORTANTLY, in VLC, click SAVE after you choose your settings!!

Okay, that was SRT. Long, wasn't it? But well worth it. I love customizing my subtitles to fit the mood of the movie. I usually go with the above picture (Arial Rounded MT Bold), but for horror movies some other subtitles look better. Try changing it, and you'll really improve your movie-experience. I really didn't like seeing those plain white Arial Font subtitles when SRT files are loaded.

==========================

So, what about IDX/SUB files? Well, unfortunately, they are not text-based. In fact, they are stamped images that overlay the video-picture, and there is no way to really change it (that I know of).
