How to change video plugin for Firefox John_Chee Oct 21st, 05, 01:43 PM #1 (permalink)
I using Mozilla firefox then when I click on those links that have videos it uses windows media player (the old version) and for .mp3 or wav files they use quicktime. Is there anyway I can change the players as I don't like the WMP old version.?

wmv and asf is a proprietary format and also patented by microsoft...so no others embedded media player can support without paying a royalty fee...

there is mozilla activex plugin design to support legacy software for firefox but strongly NOT recommended to install due to security risk...

you may try download WMP10 or 9 anyway

Windows Media Player

Windows Media Player 7.1 is not supported on Windows 95 or NT 4.0.
Workaround: It is possible to install Windows Media Player 7.1 on Windows 95 or NT 4.0, however, this is not a supported procedure. Installing Windows Media Player 7.1 on Windows 95 or NT 4.0.

When Windows Media Player 9.0 is installed, Mozilla still uses the Windows Media Player 6.4 control (bug 193883).
Workaround: Applying the Windows Media Player 9.0 registry patch will make Mozilla use the Windows Media Player 9.0 control. Alternatively, you can try using the Windows Media Player ActiveX Control.

Using the Windows Media Player 9.0 control may cause Mozilla to crash on exit on Windows 2000 systems. This appears to be triggered by having the Java plugin installed. [Bug 244713]. Upgrading to Java Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4 is reported to fix this problem.

apply this patch to get new wmp9 work for you...
