What version is your Acronis True Image ?

Anyway, the easiest/safest way is to partition your HDD to 2, save the backup image to "D:" drive, then if shit happens again, jus pop in the recovery startup CD and recover using the image on "D:" drive.

In this way, when backing up/recovery, it is faster cos image is save/retrieve from HDD.

Also suggest that U burn a copy of the image to DVD (when time permits/when free) jus in case the whole HDD spoil and thus needs RMA.

Never use version 12 before.

U should install the application in Windows in which U can create bootable recovery CD which U can use in case there is a problem booting up into Windows.

Recovery should be done only via the bootable recovery CD (recommended and easier), not via safe mode.
