Windows XP SP3 - USB Devices Go Haywire! sghardwareguy Sep 9th, 09, 05:54 PM #1 (permalink)
I have been using Windows XP SP3 for quite some time now. Previously, I did not use a lot of USB devices and the ones that I used worked most of the time.

Previously, I used a PS/2 keyboard and mouse. I have sold off my PS/2 mouse and now I am using a Logitech Spot Mouse (optical USB). I have the latest Logitech SetPoint drivers and my mouse can be detected by Windows XP most of the time.

I have the latest BIOS firmware for my mainboard and I also have all the latest Windows updates installed. I have even tried to ASUS registry fix that was available on their web site. Nothing seems to work at the moment.

My webcam seems to work fine but my mouse and game controllers don't!

I got them to work fine for a while but it didn't last very long. What I did was to remove all the USB controller devices and run "scan for new hardware changes". This fixed the problem for a while and I thought I was home free but now the problem is back...

During my login screen, my mouse can move for like 2 seconds before stopping. Same thing goes for my game controllers if they manage to get detected properly by windows.

Any idea how to fix this other than removing SP3? I have tried a lot solutions on the internet like installing the latest version of Windows Installer 4.5.

There is one solution that I have not tried... That is to overwrite the 2 usbport.sys file and another usbXXXX.sys file with the Windows XP SP2 files. Some people fixed their problems like this.

Any ideas?

There is a similar error here:

windows XP Sp3 all USB ports stopped working - Windows Update

Quote:
Problem is with the SP3 USB drivers:
usbehci.sys
usbport.sys

What you have to do is find a liveCD (one that you can boot from a CD that
still gives you access to the windows filesystem). Go to a PC that doesnt
have SP3 on it, or a CD w/out SP3 slipstreamed, and pull these 2 files off
it. Copy these Pre-sp3 files to "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers." Overwrite (or
rename) the existing files.

Reboot.

You should be good!

Wierd note: look at the version dates of these SP2 files, and SP3 files. If
I remember correctly, the SP2 files are newer than the SP3 ones...
Where can I download usbehci.sys and usbport.sys without paying for them?
