SMART CARD READER PROJECT metallicalived Oct 7th, 09, 03:15 PM #1 (permalink)
Hi IT savvy,

well im currently trying to do a project using ezlink card to activate/deactivate a locker using electromagnet lock.It will deduct the ezlink card after the locker has been used.Have anybody done that? what software are you guys using? can i buy the normal ezlink card reader;any software comes with it ?or do I just use the normal smart card reader?Where can i buy the cheapest smart card/ezlink reader?

if you want to use ezlink, you'll need to approach the ezlink company (Ez-Link), although this will entail paying massive licensing fees

If i were to offer an idea, what about GEMPLUS chips? Though the readers should be rather expensive too.

use google to find RFID vendors in singapore then. expect to pick up a considerable amount of C++ or Java or VB to do your project

GEMPLUS = Cash cards. The golden chip in there. Some credit cards have it too, and all cards have a unique identifier.

do you actually have to deal with cash, or a cash based system? Licencing and security will be your biggest woes.

I recommend finding a middle ground -> maybe RFID with "stored credits" (you might need an IC in the card)

Labview and PLCs will NOT serve the purpose that you want it to do. I recommend you hit the IEEE databases and google around for readers, this project has the potential to be very complicated (mysql database for user card money remaining if you want it to be truly accurate, etc.). From reading your posts, you're a long way away from actually having a working prototype...
