Paid antivirus offers more features compared to the free ones. For basic users, the free ones will suffice.

On a sidenote, Microsoft's Security Essentials is really good so far. One of the greatest annoyances with any antivirus is the impact on system resources, with some reducing your system to a crawl. I can say that Security Essentials is light-weight and boasts a simple ,clean interface, sufficient for the average user.

you can also use Avast antivirus, light on CPU resources, and free.
Been using it for years, together with 'Spambot search&destroy' - no issues at all.

i personally think stop sign antivirus is the best. i've tried quite a few other anti viruses and somehow stop sign seems to be the cheapest and most effective. go google more about it, been using for a few years now without any complains.
