I need advice again!~ DSLR, which to choose? ZhiQiang Aug 31st, 09, 09:43 PM #1 (permalink)
Hi Guys

Yes, I posted several weeks ago that I might get a Canon 500D but after going with a friend to Canon showroom, I found out that 500D feels like a toy (personal opinion, do not flame me).

My friend bought his Nikon D90 and I had a feel. It feels great and am tempted by this now.

However, being a Canon fan for so long, I am shortlisting these 2.

(1) Canon 50D Kit III (18-200) lens
(2) Nikon D90 Kit (18-105) lens

Price wise, option (1) is about $700 more expensive than option (2).

I need a very fair opinion of these 2 cameras.

(1) I need a very good walkabout lens. In terms of lens, which one should I choose? 18-105 or 18-200? Or am I wrong altogether?

Anyone can give me their point of view? Of course, I know fanboys might have a biased view. Just share.

Thanks!

Once again, thanks for your understanding that I am learning.

Thanks!

Rgds

hahaha.. my friends tried my D90 and tried the 500D at the shop. All liked the solid feel of D90.

Anyway, i think the grip is the most important, it must feel good in ur hands..

If you dun have any lens from any camp, try the 50D and the D90 and see which DSLR body feels better in your hands.

Sorry, cant help on which lens to use unless u know your own still. I kept to my D90 kit lens and then explored wat focal range i like.

And if you were to get the 50D, i will highly recommend that u get the body only and hten spend $1.3k-$1.5k for a 2nd hand EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM lens. Saw one selling in camera garage.

personally used the 500D and D90 before myself... 50D only try out at shop

Pros for D90: I like the grip and feel. D90's smaller and lighter. Personal preference for layouts of button/userfriendliness.

Pros for 50D: Great ISO noise control, plus canon's lenses generally cheaper.

before I bought my own DSLR, I tried Canon 500D and Nikon D90. To me, D90 is much more comfortable when you holding probably because compare to 500D, D90 is much bigger (right hand grip is more protruding) but I think its quite heavy.

I think for DSLR, you need to know people around you who has lens you could borrow and try to get the same brand so you and your friend can share. After all, a good photo, whether its good or not, a good camera is secondary, skills are primary.

Just a few cents on the walk around lens,

I would suggest getting two lenses for the purposes of walking ard. Even though the price might be high on the go,

1. 3rd party 15/17 - 50/55 with a F2.8
2. Canon 55-250

If you are a person shooting a fair amount, the F2.8 will come in handy in when shooting in low light and nicer bokeh.

Or you can wait for the new Canon lenses that will be coming soon.
