D90 is out of yr 1.5k budget unless yr getting body alone. With the 18-105mm kit lens its more then 1.5K

I recommend the Nikon D5000. its ard 1150 with 18-55mm kit lens. You can spend the extra getting a nice Bag, Additional Battery, High speed memory card, a good tripod, an External flash SB 400 or 600. If budget permits, get a 55-200mm Lens for greater reach.

Good beginner cam. It has the same sensor as the D90 only in a smally form factor. Do try handling them cams before deciding. It will help you alot. Hope this helps.

Its nice, but overall, after using it, it still have some lacking feature, like lack of lenses, etc...

but the most distinctive issue i've faced while using it is shutter lag, not sure if the unit i was using is having problem or if its some other issue, i've notice the shutter lag to be about .5sec or 1 sec around there... so imagine you do a 1-2-3-smile-click, you better press the button at 2.

well, focus hunting can be overwritten with faster lens and manual focus...

but shutter lag cannot... something you have to anticipate.
