Selection dilemma xiaopang Oct 14th, 09, 08:06 PM #1 (permalink)
Hi,

I'm planning to buy my 1st DSLR soon but now faced a selection dilemma.
With my budget, I have narrowed to 2 choices:

1. Canon EOS 500D body only + Tamron AF 17-50mm F/2.8 Di-II LD Aspherical

2. Canon EOS 50D Kit I EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS

I understand that 50D is a better as compared to 500D.
But 50D with kit lens vs. 500D with Tamron, I'm not too sure which is better.

Can anyone please advise?
Thanks.

50d with kit.

then upgrade the lens along the way in future.

rather than 500d and itch for a 50d.

higher cost of ownership

Thanks for all the valuable feedback... think I should pop by Canon Showroom and have a feel of both cameras before buying... I guess that the "feeling" of the camera to the photographer is important as well...

Meanwhile feel free to give comments...

i agree!!! i've a feeling that 50D with a the 18-55 kit lens would be unbalanced. The body too solid for the lens!! haha

Anyway, just to share with you that I've used the Tammy for 17-50 for three years now, and it's still functioning 100%! Image quality, sharpness, colors, etc still as good as I first bought it

I would say 500D with tammy, lens > body.. of course if can get both 50D and tammy

My advice is know all the basics, from aperture to shutter speed, metering, exposure. I find many buy without the basic knowledge of all these, and honestly speaking, if one doesn't know all this he/she is better off using a compact/prosumer.

Read up, shoot alot [with some other compact camera, hopefully one with at least aperture or shutter priority] , you'll more or less find out whether you really need the f/2.8.

By the way, kit lens aren't too shabby either. I've been using my very old kit lens [without the IS] and it works well.
