Quality DSLR Shutter Release at $23 (All DSLR Brands!)

I'm thinking of getting a DSLR really soon but then i'm still deciding on which model to get. I need some input from you guys. I'm currently looking at Canon's 500D with kit lens or Nikon's D90 kit lens. I'm still quite new to DSLRs so i don't know what i should be looking for in a BODY, since i'll be getting a kit lens first before upgrading to better lenses. Anyone can help? And how would a Canon 50D compare with a 500D? Should i consider a 50D since i'm still very new?

Thanks in advance, i know there are alot of comparison threads but mostly doesn't touch on the things i might want to know.
