Join Singapore Youth & Media Competition and win attractive prizes! medusa-sg Jul 21st, 09, 04:19 PM #1 (permalink)
Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s School of Film and Media Studies is inviting all secondary and tertiary students to participate in our Singapore Youth & Media Competition (SYMCompetition). Organised by Media-Education Solutions (MEDUSA), it aims to get youths to use critical and researching skills to come up with insightful research papers on “Sports and the Media”. Selected research papers will be presented during our Singapore Youth & Media Conference (SYMConference) in 2010.

In Singapore’s media scene, the year of 2008 marks a new advancement in the development of sports content in the media. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the MDA and Singapore Sports Council (SSC) was signed, with SGD1 million set aside to develop the sports media industry in Singapore.

Keeping all this in mind, and anticipating the upcoming Youth Olympic Games in 2010, SYMCompetition will be a thought-provoking experience that sparks a greater interest in Sports and the Media.

Details
There are two categories in this competition; the details are as follows:

Secondary Level: 2,500-word limit (excluding references), with 4 academic references, of which only 2 may be from online sources.

Tertiary Level: 5,000-word limit (excluding references) with 8 academic references, of which only 5 may be from online sources.

An abstract/introduction of research topic (100-500) words is to be submitted, with at least 3 academic references, in which entries that meet the assessment criteria will be notified to carry on to submit their final research papers.

Some areas of research within the broad topic of Sports and the Media include, but are not limited to, the topics listed below.

1. Gender
2. Broadcast media
3. New media
4. Print media
5. Popular Culture
6. Commercialism in Sports and Media
7. Advertising
8. Sports development
9. Promotion of Sports as a Lifestyle
10. Sports sponsorship

Below are the attractive prizes the winners of the two categories stand to win:

Secondary
First prize: $600
Second prize: $400
Third Prize: $200

Tertiary
First prize: $1000
Second prize: $800
Third Prize: $500

Instructions
1. All submissions MUST be typewritten using a commonly-used word-processing software (e.g. Microsoft Word), double-spaced, with a font size of 12 (Times New Roman).
2. The research paper should have a cover page stating the research topic, the name(s) of the participant(s), the school, the category of submission, and contact details (phone number and email address).
3. Submission of abstract must reach us by 21st August 2009.
4. Selected abstracts for the final submission will be informed by 25th September 2009. The format and guidelines for submission of final research paper, as well as the assessment criteria, will be provided.
5. Submission of final research papers must reach us by 27th November 2009. Extension may be granted on a case by case basis.
6. All entries should be mailed to medusa.sg@gmail.com.
