Murder Mystery Supper Theatre 3: A Slow Boat from China

The fans demanded and the Singapore Indoor Stadium (SIS) responded. On 9th-10th October 2009, the Murder Mystery Supper Theatre 3 returns this time with the all action drama - ‘A Slow Boat from China’ to the SIS function room with an intimate setting of 120.

If Cluedo is your thing, then once again ‘A Slow Boat from China’ will be a night to remember: This amusing affair is a combination of an evening at the theatre with 3-course Asian finger food as you enjoy a shipload of fun and laughter playing the detective and interrogating the characters. Picking up clues along the way, you will also stand the chance to win a prize for guessing correctly the identity of the murderer from amongst a cast of sinister suspects. And if you’d like to dress up in your finest ‘Shanghai Glam’ as a 1920’s femme fatale, gangster or adventurer – a prize will be offered for the best-dressed couple!

The evening commences with guests invited to enjoy a welcome drink as they gather to mingle with the characters in ‘A Slow Boat to China’. Food is then served as the professional and talented cast from ‘Masquerade’ tells this intriguing tale of murder and betrayal.

The Plot

Shanghai 1928 is famous for its smoky jazz venues, the playground of gangsters and swaggering colonial adventurers. Embark on a voyage of romance, mystery and adventure aboard the steamship Pearl of the Orient and meet your travelling companions – and what a motley crew they are.

Captain and owner of the Pearl, Horatio Briggs, have two loves in his life: his daughter, Amy, and his ship. In order to fulfill his wife’s dying wish that their daughter, Amy, make something of herself as a singer, Briggs must reluctantly sell the boat, condemning him to a life ashore. Moreover, the only person willing and able to buy the Pearl is ruthless business man, Charles Coombes. He is accompanied by his long-suffering wife, Kathleen, a woman with a very warm heart, who might, if only things were otherwise, be a source of consolation to the Captain.

Also aboard is Martin Jarndyce, fallen on hard times, and reliant on his companion Constance Wittering, but relations between this odd couple seem strained. Also aboard is anthropologist, Matthew Prior, en route to the Thousand Islands to study the native ways up close and personal - by going native himself. As the evening unwinds it becomes clear that he is nursing some kind of secret or anxiety, as well as a passion for Amy.
